Great!

Patrick, any chance of a transcript, or summary, being posted here for those of us around the world who will not easily be able to obtain this publication?

Malcolm, I've been meaning to ask this for a long time. What cruise magazines are available for us in the states? Are overseas subscriptions available? The only ones I can find are Cruise Travel and Porthole. Great for specs and pictures of ships but neither one will ever have a discouraging word about a ship or a cruise line.

It would be nice to see something with a objective view.

The best maritime magazine that I have seen is 'Ships Monthly' It features Cruise ships, Ocean Liners and many other types of ships.

The overseas subscription price is pretty reasonable.

Indeed "ships monthly" is a very good magazine, especially for those who are not only interested in cruiseships but all kind of different ships around the world.
The thing with publishing it here has two reasons not to do it:
1) the publishers "Humburg Verlag" in Germany would not want to publish the articles of their magazines on the net without that they earn any money with it. Further more they shall only be available in their magazine.
2) It is written in german and to translate all of it into english would take lots of time.

But you can have a look at www.humburg.de/anbord/
There are possibilities to order the magazine and it has a small overview of the features.

My favorite maritime publication in Sea Lines put out by the Ocean Liner Society in England. It is all about ocean liners and cruise ships, which is where my interest lies. Lots of color photos and great articles of ships past and present. Each (quarterly) issue includes a a review written from a passenger while sailing on a ship in the 60's or 70's. I like it so much that I ordered all available past issues.

My favorites are:

Cruise Industry News Quarterly
Cruise Business Review
Seatrade Cruise Review
DESIGNS

These are not fluff publications geared toward the consumer like Porthole of Cruise Travel, but instead are more for cruise line execs and other companies related to the cruise industry.

The magazines talk more about the technical side of the cruise industry, from the latest trends happening in cruising, to the newest innovations involved in designing and building a new cruise ship. Most have a feature cruise line and ship each issue, and go into far more detail regarding operations and technicalities than the average cruiser would want to know. The pictures aren't bad either! Many you would never find in the cruise line brochure .... like drydock and construction photos!

The latter isn't bad, but not good enough that I'd pay for it...

The former was once great, and somehow ended up in a really lowly spot. I don't even bother to look at the latest issue nowadays...

I'm the last person to go saying something complimentary about Douglas Ward, but it seems Porthole has been going downhill since he left. The first few Ward-less issues weren't bad, but within a few years the quality deteriorated to the point of pure fluff, as you said.

They even have a column written by Ivana Trump - not, to my knowledge, an insider in the cruise industry .
