COSTA SERENA being built at Fincantieri's Sestri Ponente shipyard will be homeported in Bari, Southern Italy, when she enters service in May 2007. She will depart Bari every Monday on a 7-day itinerary that will take her to: Olympia (Greece), Izmir and Istanbul (Turckey), Dubrovnik (Croatia), and Venice.

I'm intrigued by the fact that so many Med-based ships sail on Mondays--does anyone know why? Seems like a week-end departure would suit the local markets better, for a 7-night cruise.

In my post I actually meant Katakolon (Greece), since Olympia is not a sea port.

Rich, your question has merit. I can only assume Costa wants COSTA SERENA to be in Venice on the Sunday. Maybe Europeans are taking long-weekends these days.

Mondays are the best day for honeymoons. Here, in Spain, is a very important market.

Her real homeport will be actually Venice, on Sunday...
She will be doing the Costa Mediteranea itineray, which only called 3 hours in Bari. This home port thing just means that south italians passengers will be able to embark and to disembark during this short call, just like it's already the case with the Meditteranea. Be sure that outside Italy, this cruise will be marketed as a Venice round trip.

Now I wonder, where will the Meditteranea go ?

Spanish market must be different: you have two alternatives, Venice or Bari.

COSTA MEDITERRANEA

Mayo-Junio-Julio-Agosto-Septiembre-Octubre-Noviembre 2007: Venecia, Bari, Olimpia, Santorini, Mykonos, Rodas, Dubrovnik.

You can see Costa's 2007 programation on my web.

The press release I quoted was from ANSA (Italy’s equivalent of AFP), it said Bari was the homeport. As you said Pascal, Venice will be a homeport too, probably targeting those coming from Northern Europe and from outside.

I believe Costa’s decision to use Bari as a homeport is to counteract MSC’s announcement of homeporting MSC MUSICA there. MSC intends to target the Spanish market by chartering 74 flights from Madrid and Barcelona to Bari’s new airport. I didn’t add this info to the post I made in ’MSC Cruises strengthens ties with Bari (Italy)’, however Matts kindly made a mention. Also Pullmantur will probably do the same, but as yet I don’t know which ship that will be. I think Cruceromania may be able to give more details on both matters.
