Monday 4.2.2008 start of production Genesis 2:

akeryards.fi:

Production of the second Genesis class cruise vessel started

On Monday 4 February 2008, Turku shipyard started the construction of a new floating holiday resort. The flame cutting machines were fired up to cut out the steel plate shapes for the second one of the gigantic Genesis class cruise vessels. This vessel is a sister ship to the earlier-started construction project, proceeding under the name Genesis I.

It still remains a strict corporate secret what kind of new innovations the Genesis II will incorporate. For the time being, the title of the ‘biggest cruise vessel in the world' is held by the Independence of the Seas, to be delivered in less than three months. Knowing that this Freedom class ship already features a surfing pool with wave generator, indoor ice rink, and outdoor rock wall for climbing, for the Genesis, the most imaginative people are already guessing rollercoaster rides...

Two-billion-euro assignment: building of the biggest floating resorts in the world

Aker Yards, Turku has in its orderbook two huge luxury cruise vessels of the Genesis class to be delivered for Royal Caribbean in 2009 and 2010. Colossal and overwhelming are words that have been used to describe these giants. And the truth is they will be the world's largest cruise vessels taking an enormous step into the future with their bold design, daring innovation and technological advancements - with a price tag of two billion euro.

Almost a full quartermile

Even though Aker Yards is experienced in building the world's largest ships - three vessels in the Freedom class - thorough preparations are on their way when starting the building of the even larger Genesis class vessels. Those will be 47 metres wide and 360 metres long, i.e. 40 m longer than the height of the Eiffel tower! Height over the water line will be 65 m.

Huge 3-dimensional puzzle

Building of this big challenge has been compared to putting together a huge 3-dimensional puzzle. One vessel consists of 180 grand blocks, the biggest one being 22 m in length, 30 m in width and weighing 600 tons! The vessel's weight is 12 times the weight of the Eiffel tower.

30,000 drawings

Design is also well on its way, with some 500 designers involved at the moment. Actually, it started already a couple of years before signing the contract. The conceptual design was done by Aker Yards in cooperation with Royal Caribbean. Half of the basic design is technical solutions, requiring also special know-how from Aker Yards, and done in house. The other half is appproval and classification drawings, which come either with the turnkey deliveries or from our design supplier network. Already the basic design results in some 3,000 drawings. The detail engineering - i.e., the workshop drawings - produce as many as 30,000 drawings. These come from the supplier network.

But Rprom can't have a natural light cause it located under CP, but there should be windows from the cabins.

Wow, time is going so fast. We have the first steel cut for the second Genesis and we still don't know much about the first one.

A note about an Innovation, I saw a show the other day, I think it was Good Morning America sponsored by Royal Caribbean, and in the show they were going to put one of those gravity machines where you can float like in space. I had thought about this a while ago but now that I saw RCI along with this I started thinking maybe one of Genesis' innovations might be something like this.

Rock climbing walls

With all due respect senior citizens are not going to be the target audience for 'Genesis'.
