Anyone have any news at all about these ships. SD is due to be christened in April and as yet there are no details at all about her refurb or future cruises, given she will sail her inaugral in approx 12/16 weeks time they are not leaving themselves long to sell them. I heard from an aquaintance who works at Fincantieri that he thought they had not even started the refurb yet ?

Fantasia is also due out I think in June ? Again no details anywhere as to where she will sail, other than she will have a suites only area that I believe also has its own restaurant and pool etc there is also no detail on the ship.

Perhaps both are having problems ?

I don't know much about the Silver Dawn, but I know that MSC Fantasia isn't due for delivery before the Autumn (but Musica class MSC Poesia will be delvered in April). She has just recieved her funnel...

See Michel Jeannot website to see what happens in Saint-Nazaire yards.

Hello

Here are some pics from mer et marine:
http://www.meretmarine.com/diaporama.cfm?id=106627&page=1

Just a big musica, in other words a bit boxy ship. But we all knows that Msc ships are not famous for their exteriors which is more or less the same (roughly speaking more decks and more balconies).

Oh my goodness, I seriously thought that Fantansia was to have a different stern. Is it just me of is it that I saw a different and better looking stern in the earlier renderings?

I think that for now, the Musica/Coral Princess type stern is not working for Fantasia.

In the earlier renderings I have seen, they are mostly forward quarter views thus, have not really seen the stern. I did some digging on MSC's site and found this press release with a side elevation.

pdf file

On a side note, I found another press release with some information on public rooms.

The most beautiful ship in the world - is the MSC claim. Interesting that she has a Formula 1 simulator - don't Costa have that too!.

However its time for the wrath of cruise talkers with some of these comparisons. I believe the leaning tower of PISA is roughly 56m tall, not sure how 60m tall is 6 times that, the Eiffel tower is over 300m tall so I'm guessing that comparison is ships length vs tower height?

------------------------------------------
MSC Fantasia will be 133,500 grt, 333 meters long, 38 meters wide and almost 60 meters in
height which is six times the height of the Tower of Pisa, nine meters taller than the Eiffel Tower, and
as high as a 23 storey building. It will have a maximum speed of 23 knots and propulsion of 40 Mega
Watts, the equivalent of 120 Ferrari or a 1000 Fiat Punto. There will be 1,800 km of electrical cable
(the distance between Naples to Nantes!) and 65,000 light fittings.

"floating out"

and personally i do not like the stern... (no tiered aft decks...uhum) but she is showing some amazing
lines (sideview) wich i like for a ship with this huge size...

Not terribly impressed but we all knew roughly what she would like like. Nice bow though with a good line up the superstructure.

A general question though, why are the super structure on most new ships inset the way they are, Millenium class, Vistas and all MSC's are the same, NCLs are not. Given either design uses basically the same amount of steel etc they loose a huge amount of internal space they could use for bigger cabins, extra cabins, bigger Atriums etc. What is the logic ?

Who needs that internal space? For some lines it is more important to have more outside cabins. (with balconies) For a given cabin size one therefore tries to make the decks with cabins as narrow as possible. This helps to safe weight which might allow to build a bit higher. (which could mean more outside cabins - or generally more 'weight' atop)

Mike - Simply put: taller and narrower = more balconies.

Aker Yards held a float-out ceremony for Fantasia last Wednesday. My friend Steve Read was there, and I am sure he won't mind me pointing you towards his pictures here:

MSC Fantasia

It does not look like Steve got to go aboard Fantasia, though he did get to see a little more of MSC Poesia, which is due to be named by Sophia Loren in Dover in April.

MSC Poesia

I read elsewhere that although the float-out ceremony for Fantasia went ahead with bands and fireworks, the ship didn't actually get its bottom wet for a few more days, because there was still work to complete below the waterline.
