The website for the expedition The Spirit of Mawson, where you can read the blog and a good report is on the BBC.

About 9 hours ago the Rescuing Chinese Icebreaker SNOW DRAGON was seen on the horizon and there is a link to distant photo on that page. Other reports say she was 15 nm away and making 2kts in strong winds and limited visibility, but hopefully she should have probably reached Akademik Shokalskiiy by now.

No she hasn't been reached yet... ignoring the over dramatic sensationalised headline of the Mail Online, reading the text it appears things must be really heavy going as to make the last 6nm it may take another 2 days and may need the back up of the other 2 vessels on their way and not that far behind.

The more powerful ice breaker Aurora Australis has had to abandon an attempt to reach Akademik Sholaskiy too and awaiting better weather before having another go. Read here and here.

The passengers have now all been transferred to Aurora Australis using Snow Dragon's Helicopter. Good video here. Akademik Shokalskiy's crew remain aboard her. Snow Dragon herself is now stuck, but hopes to break the ice in the next day or so.

BBC is reporting that the Xue Long has now issued a distress signal that she herself is stuck. And the Aurora Australis is possibly on standby to 'rescue' her. Aurora Australis of course has the rescued passengers aboard.

Polar Star coming to the 'rescue' now Who is next? The largest, 50 Years of Victory?

This would make a better film than Captain Phillips

It's impossible for these nuclear powered icebreakers to operate in tropical waters which is why they can't go to Antarctica, however, there are already some nice movies :

Nice movie, there are some good ones around. Is it true or a myth that the nuclear powered ice breakers can't cross the tropics re the water temps? There are so many 'stories' but no-one seems to actually know the facts.

AURORA AUSTRALIS who came to the rescue of the passengers of AKADEMIK SHOKALSKIY, has herself had a few problems over the last couple of weeks, grounding on 24 Feb, when she broke her moorings in a blizzard in Mawson. The expedition members were taken ashore by barge.

See here. She has now been refloated and has minor structural damage to the hull, but deemed seaworthy to return to Australia with just essential crew.
