hi there

one week ago the question came up why
the tourist season ends in Norway cruising

the answers i read today were not satisfactory to my mind and partly wrong

it is correct that there is very little daylight in wintertime nevertheless the cold people speak about is a kind of paradox

at this point of earth the waters remain open and don't freeze
it's relatively warm with temperatures above
0 celsius
this all caused by the warm golfstream passing
along the coast
so the ports remain open, and Hurtigruten continues
all winter

actually there is more and more interest for winter cruising

and you cannot compare the Baltic to North Sea, Aker builder will tell you that the Baltic sea will
freeze, so all Baltic trips are indeed off limits

best regards
b. Joe

ps questions are never stupid, some answers are...

Yes, but there are cruise ships which can handle these ice conditions. (like the ferries can handle it)

Well, there are stupid questions but in doubt it's still better to ask than not to ask.

Hi!

I had to comment this. Actually baltic see have not freezed completely for meny years, but still we have ice near land, so in baltic see you have to have a ships with 1A Super ice clssification. All ferries in baltic have it. For example Oasis can't come to icey waters cause the propulsion system is not designed for this (you remember FOTS leavindg turku 2006).
Color Magic / Fantasy have 1A super and the are allmoust cruse ships with promenade, spa, and meny shops, restaurants and discos.
And capitals around baltic see are pretty amazing in winter to, you might feel real "white" christmas.

PS! Thanks for the pictures Galaxy, they are beautiful. I was this year in norway but i didn't make to geiranger this time, i hope next year.
You have a beautiful country.

I guess the next question to ask is which cruise ships DO have a 1A Super Ice Classification? The question asked by Cam J was why is there an off season, not why does the tourist season end. Not the same thing.

By the way, that last picture of Oceana is stunning. P&O could use that in a brochure.

I am not sure whether the 1A Super (or equivalent) is a requirement for a short cruise to some cities in the Baltic region at favorable ice conditions. One would not have to go to places with extreme ice conditions at the worst time of the year and an itinerary for a cruise to the Baltic during the 'winter' would have to be different (shorter?) anyhow than a cruise during the summer so a lower ice class could be sufficient.

I was on there! In the morning did the land train to Olden Lake -15OK/ £15, a nice trip. In the afternoon I walked up to the Briksdal Glacier and back down again, a great day, will never forget it.

The guide said we were the last but one ship to visit Olden this year!

...Ummm.. perhaps another reason could be the North sea is just too damn rough to sail to the Fjords.!
Two days after that photo was taken Oceana was caught in a Force 10 end of hurricane Danny, a storm so bad we lost our satellite dome from the top of the ship.
I have posted photos today on my first post.
