I'm looking for any info on the fitting out of cruise ship cabins - both from passengers - their views on the standard and range of the fixtures and fittings, and also from industry insiders connected with the fitting out and/or refurbishing of cabins etc.
Can anybody out-there help??
Many Thanks,
GM

Century: European, smooth radii, polished stainless steel: thought out efficient use of space.
Inspiration (All Carnival Fantasy Class): Vinyl laminated pressed boards, sharp edges: lots of space waisted, beds arranged with one side (Vs. the head of the bed) against the bulkhead.

Hello,

Interesting topic... Cabins are pre-fabricated in units and then inserted into the ship. The only cabin factory I know of are the famous Pikkiko Works at Kvaerner-Masa Yards... But I assume that all the yards have facilities for pre-fabricated cabins? Or do some have them shipped in from Finland or elsewhere?

As for materials, quality, etc. - it ranges from superb to appalling. Here is my opinion:

Horizon - excellent. Decent use of space. Excellent white tile bathroom. Light wood fittings, high quality fabrics, etc.

Nordic Empress - not so good. Rough edges, etc. are relatively common, fabrics and such are a notch down from Horizon. Lots of open shelves instead of drawers or even cabinets. Usual RCCL masterful space utilization.

Seaward (Norwegian Sea) - horrible. Tons of awful formica in revolting colors (my cabin was a bright orange). Horrible space utilization - no storage space. Shower wet the whole bathroom. Drawers were not attached in any way so fell out and on to the floor when the ship pitched. Closets arranged so that when you open the door you are looking at the front of the item, thus you must remove items to get to those at the back. The pits.

Sky Princess - sturdy. Metal edges on the walls, etc. Formica furniture. Good space utilization by my standards - little sitting room but big bathroom and cavernous and wonderfully organized storage.

Grand Princess - above average. Nice materials, etc. and decent space utilization. Still not as good as Horizon.

Majesty of the Seas - same as Nordic Empress except the space utilization wasn't quite as good.

Voyager of the Seas - quality pretty decent, on par with Grand Princess. Amazing space utilization - smallish bathroom but they manage to fit a real sitting area (loveseat and coffee table) and huge amounts of storage in all shapes and sizes. The best thought out and generally most livable cabin I've ever been in.

So what does everyone else think?

Happy Cruising,
Cruiseny

A lot of new ships seem to have similar cabins to each other, just with different trim and soft furnishings?

New ships still include some amazing penthouse suites at amazingly high prices!

'Brilliance' has 11 grades of cabin fron 'Inside' to 'Royal Suite', the latter at £15,000 (GBP) per person, per week!

Sorry... I don't follow you there Malcom.

Do you mean differences between ships or between cabins on the same ship?

Happy Cruising,
