La Guaira is the only stop where you should take a tour - not free lance. We went to the Bavarian (German) colony on 1/6/99. It was OK - good tour guide - but long. The trip is 2 - 21/2 hours each way. Except for the fact that we didn't spend much time in the town center it was interesting. Others took the Caracas/glass factory tour and said that was OK also. None of the tours were great, but these are the best in a country where you want to take a guided tour. My real question was....why stop in Venezuela anyway???

Just got back from dawn princes cruise to
western carib. La Guaria was the one I asked about we went on the tour to the glass factory enjoyed the tour and the glass factory. I'd recomend it to anyone going to there on the Dawn Princes. As far as guns the milatary police carry thier issue rifles(they are not machine guns) found the people and place pleasant and interesting. like any city
you must stay out of bad areas (felt safer than in Miami )

Stopped in Laguira in 69,73,and 97.City has become huge and extremely unsafe. The city of Caracas is a large cosmopolitan city and quite interesting. There is museum in the center of the city which has really been developed since my first visit. I think a city tour is a great way to see the area and most of the tours stop at the glass factory where I found beautiful glassware. One word of caution, they don't ship.
