Has anyone cruise on Norwegian Star before? I would appreciate any info you can offer, size of cabins & suites, food, service, history of ship etc etc. We are planning to cruise on this ship to Australia 7/99.
Does anyone know what other ships cruise Australia during July & August? This is the only one I could find.
Thanks!

Lily,

Since the ship was moved to Australia feedback has been mixed - in general, great itineray but the food and general condition of the ship are not up to NCL standards.

You can find a review by a recent traveler on our "Your Favorite Cruises" page at http://www.travelpage.com/yourfav/yourfav_cruise.htm

Thanks.

Something about the ship's history:
The ship was build at Wartsila Yards in Finland and made its maiden cruise in November 1973 for the Norwegian Royal Viking Line as the MS Royal Viking Sea. At this time Royal Viking Line belonged to Kloster Cruises Ltd., Oslo which did also own Norwegian Cruise Line and Royal Cruise Line.
Originally rated as one of the three most luxury cruise ships in service (the other ones were its sisterships Royal Viking Star/now Black Watch and Royal Viking Sky/now SuperStar Capricorn - already sold again) the ship was streched in 1983 and got its current size of 28078 tons. In 1991 the ship was transfered to Royal Cruise Line and totally refurbished. As the MS Royal Odyssey the ship was very popular in this line and quite successful.
Major changements came in 1997 when Kloster Cruises Ltd. sold Royal Viking Line to Cunard and a bit later ceased operations of Royal Cruise Line. Every ship of Royal Cruise Line, except the MS Crown Odyssey which was transgered to NCL, was sold to other lines. The MS Royal Odyssey was for a short period sold to American interests and a bit later bought by Actioner Shipping in Oslo. Norwegian Cruise Line has chartered the Royal Odyssey for six years and named it MS Norwegian Star.
The ship finally stayed Norwegian but nothing is anymore like in her days as the Royal Viking Sea. It isn't even really up to NCL standards yet but will provide a well-programmed cruise experience for passengers who won't want to cruise with Mega ships.

Lily,

Cruising Australian waters in June - July (our winter in the Southern Hemisphere, but good cruising weather anyway), mainly on the east coast, are Norwegian Star, P&O's Pacific Princess, and around Cairns (northern Queensland/Great Barrier Reef), I think the ship name (a small ship) is Reef Explorer.

Most cruise ships calling into Australia do so during Jan - Mar, our summer, on their World Cruise, picking up mainly Sydney, Melbourne, Fremantle (Perth) and occasionally Hobart, or the nothern way from Sydney to Brisbane, Cairns and Darwin.

Cheers,
Russell Coghlan

We cruised the Star out of Houston in 1997..I hate to tell you but it was awful...The a/c was broke, our room was 90...They moved us and it was some better but still needed a fan...The ship is just too old..We were told it had been refurbished, not so...I willl say the rooms were big, but I would rather have a smaller room and some a/c...The food was ok, didn't really care for the desserts...The staff was very friendly and did a great job..I really feel this ship needs to be retired..We complained to NCL and they offered us a discount on our next cruise, no thanks, I'll stick with Princess.
