I've been in the Caronia class on the QE2. It doesn't matter which class are you in, all classes dress the same. The passengers are dining in different restaurants but there is not a difference between their cloths at all.
The most formal event is the captain's party. Also, many people dress formal for the show when the evening is a formal one.
For formal evenings passengers have to wear Tux for men and long gowns for ladies. For 6 night Trans Atlantic you can even have 4! formal nights. During the day in the lounges, shops, bars ect., people wear casual cloths. "Dress pants and blouse, nice jeans and sweater, or khaki pants with loafers and a nice pullover shirt?" Well they wear all of these, it depends on the passenger's taste. Wear whatever is comfortable for you. But I didn't see shorts inside maybe on the deck, but as you know a transatlantic cruise is winter almost all year. The most informal places are: The Lido, the pool areas, decks, the laundry room. There isn't a semi-formal evening on the QE2 at all.
