The Veendam is one of HAL's most popular ships. It is also my favorite. I don't care too much for the mega ships that carry 2000 plus passengers. The Veendam is just right being midsize and carries 1200.

Happy and smooth cruising

We were on the Veendam last November and enjoyed the cruise. Left from New York to the Carribean. Kind of rough weather but then we are used to it Missed Puerto Rico and Half Moon Cay due to weather. The ship is lovely, sister ship to the Statendam, Ryndam Maasdam. Can't remember what the food was like, but then we don't go for the food. Officers are English - altho the other HAL ships have Dutch officers. The young Dutch fellas don't want to commit their lives to the sea so HAL has had to go elsewhere for their officers. They seem to be more amiable than the Dutch. Go on the Veendam, enjoy yourself.

Heard a number of negatives re British officers on Dutch ships - mostly from people who had never been on a ship with British officers - turned out that they found the Brits more friendly and more visable than the Dutch. From what we heard from the stewards, waiters. etc. they too were were happy. Don't pass judgement until you've tried the mix!

i'm going on the veendam, also in November. Not only will it be my first cruise on the Veendam, it will be my first cruise on Holland America. Why is the Veendam considered one of HAL's most popular ships? If that's true, I'm glad I chose it. any other info about Veendam or HAL would be good. I'll also check out the reviews.

For Scotto - Maybe it's the British Officers!

Seriously we were on the Veendam last November and had a great time.

We're booked for November this year
(Hi Sympatico) on another of the 'dam ships'. Holland America is a great line.

Yes, maybe it is the British Officers. More approachable and sometimes not so stuffy.
Hi Green - maybe we were on the same cruse November? We missed Puerto Rico and Half Moon Cay - did you? This November to the Statendam out of San Diego - different for a change.

Hi Sympatico - Veendam last november - we also missed SanJuan and I won $1,000 US on the slots - pay back for all I've spent on previous cruises! See you on the Statemdam - we may even eat dinner together!
