Good question Malcolm

It would be nice to see what the differences, major or subtle or if there are any, between two ships of the same general class/size.

I am kinda embarressed to say, but yes, i have been on both, I do work at Carnival, but when The Grand Princess was new, i got my buddy who works at Princess Cruises to book me a cruise, and i was just curious to see what its like, and to see the new things they had on board and compare it to our ships. The Grand Princess is very nice ship, and i dont have nothing really bad to say about it, the only thing is, if you dont care much about movement, my advice would be not to go on the Sky Deck when waters get rough, myself, the movement didn't bother me, but it did my wife, so we went to a lower floor and toward the middle of the ship where its more stable, but being up high and at the Stern of the ship its only natural your gonna feel more movement on ALL ships.
The Destiny, I have nothing bad to say about it either, both ships Destiny and Grand Princess are wonderful ships, both have lots of room and so many things to do onboard. Myself, The Grand Princess seemed more upclass to me, and The Destiny seems more "down to earth" for just anyone, not just because i work for Carnival, but Grand Princess just seemed more upclass, plus prices are definitly *HIGHER* than Destiny's.
I would say if your a Doctor or Lawyer someone who makes a Salary of $100,000 plus a year, go for the Grand Princess, but for average people like myself, i consider The Destiny the way to go, Prices are alot cheaper and to me, Destiny feels more comfortable, makes you feel more at home.
But as far as my opinion there both great ships.
Although The Grand Princess does has a higher GRT the Destiny has MORE Cabins and can accomodate more passengers Than Grand Princess. The Triumph will have even more Cabins than The Destiny. I will say one little thing that I didn't like about Grand Princess is it has 35 DIFFERENT categories while Carnival only has 12 different Categories. Its nothing really major, but its just I found that a bit confusing.

Thanks CCLines for your opinion. It made interesting reading.

I've been on neither ship. But I do know that Carnival target the 'Joe Public' segment of the Market by offering very good prices. However, Princess do target a little more up-scale and generally charge more.

However, if Princess only appealed to "Doctor or Lawyers, or someone who makes a Salary of
$100,000 plus a year" I think that their ships would be cruising empty. It is the likes of the Cunard/Seabourne brands target the more affluent end of the market.

Once again there is no answer to which is the best ship or the best Cruise line!

I have sailed on the Grand Princess and have plans to sail the Voyager but I don't know if I will ever sail on Carnival. Although I'm 29 and probably in the target market for Carnival...I'm not a fan of the ship's decor as seen in their brocures. I also don't want to be around loud and rowdy groups. Sorry I didn't answer your question.

Hey MagnmPI, check out the Triumph if you ever get the chance (not to mention if the mood seizes you). I haven't been on the Destiny, but while the pictures seem to indicate that it's OK as far as Carnival ships go, the Triumph is much nicer. I still prefer Princess, but this is as nice a ship as you might ever see from the Carnival fleet.

For a more in-depth analysis, check out my review under "Carnival Triumph."
