we're going on the maasdam in september and are confused about their tipping policy. do you tip the usual ($3.50 to waiter, $.75 to busboy,and$3.50 to room steward),do you leave no tip like some ships, or do you do something in between? thanks for your help with this tom d

Hi Tomd

When we were on the Carnival Imagination we tipped $3.00 per day per person for the Waiter, $3.00 per day per person for the Room Steward and $1.50 per day per person for the Busboy.
I think that has now gone to $3.50, $3.50 and $2.00 respectively.
Have a great cruise.

Haveagreatday:-)

Maasdam is H.A.L. ship - no tipping required policy. However, believe most people do tip because the service is so good and you want to show appreciation.
Hi Sympatico - we too were on the Veendam last November - even with the missed ports a good time was had by all - see you on another 'dam ship' this November!

We travel exclusively with HAL and even though they have a "no tipping required" policy we always tip - $5.00 per day per couple for dining room steward (eat only dinner in D.R.) $2.50 per couple for the bus boy, $6.00 per couple per day for the cabin steward - more if he does extra for us and don't forget the wine steward, usually we tip $25-30, depending how often we buy the wine.
Hi Green - see you in November!!!!!!!!

HAL does have a no tipping required policy according to their brochure, after you set sail their policy changes. The cruise director explained the dollar amount we should be tipping the waiter, busboy and cabin steward. She even went to the extent of informing us that these people did not earn alot lot of money and they depend on our tips to send to their families back home. The service was OK on our first cruise so we did tip, but only because of the ple from the cruise director. Our second cruise was on Carnivals Imagination, the service was excellent and we did not mind tipping for the excellent service.

I must take issue with 'cncservo' on the matter of HAL's tipping policy. Never on any of our 20+ cruises with HAL have we felt pressured to tip or had actual amounts spelled out. At the disembarkation talk, usually on the second to last day, mention is made of tipping becuase passengers have asked quesion - it is stressed then that it is a personal matter. I wonder if you were on a HAL ship - sounds more like some other line.

I must agree with Green. With over 30 cruises on HAL we have NEVER been told that we had to tip, nor what amount to tip. If anyone asks a crew member or cruise staff, they are told it us up to them if they want to tip. Now, at the dining room table passengers have asked us what amount we usually tip and we tell them, but make it clear that is what we do and not what they have to do. I would like to know what that cruise director was because I am sure if HAL knew what she was doing, she would no longer be with them. Also, staff are not permitted to solicit tips from passengers. HAL is very strict on this policy.

I have only been on three HAL cruises but I heartily concur that no one has EVER giving a tipping lesson nor have I ever heard from any other HAL alumni of such.

I have always found the service to be outstanding and was glad to tip but it truly is a personal choice.

Dear cruise critics:
Tom d ask a question concerning tipping on a Holland American Line ship. I did respond with my experiences concerning this topic. My wife and I were not in a hallucinatory state of mind when we sailed on the dam ship. Green you even mentioned in your responce to tom d that their was conversation concerning this very subject so in reality LaCat3 they did give a tipping lesson. Hal promotes their no tipping required policy in their brochure. I have read many of the other cruise lines brochures and can not recollect any of them making the same statement, mind you I certainly have not read them all. Some do mention tipping in the small print at the back of their advertising brochure. I do not think HAL policy is any different than most other cruise lines. If tipping was a condition of cruising with any cruise line they would add it to your bill no questions asked. To my critics or any one else, do you know of any cruise line that tipping is a condition of cruising.
Holland America makes a statement in advertising their product ,no tipping required, they should not make mention of it on the cruise. I am sure they have a policy of ,no jumping overboard, I never heard any mention of this during our cruise.

Hi cncservo

Seems to me that tipping becomes a condition of cruising with Celebrity.

we have been on four holland america cruises and tipping has never been suggested. We did tip because we felt the service was excellent, but we were not pressured to do so.
