The worst memories concerning the security standard and accomodations I have about the Greek verssels ATALANTE (Med. Sun Lines)and LA PALMA (Intercruise Ltd.). BUT: Everything what was missing about the ship´s conditions, was totally replaced by the fantastic, friendly service, the good food and the very funny and casual, relaxing ambiance we had onboard and by the great itineraries which were really destination-filled.
Another ship where the service in the dining room could have been a bit better coordinated and the cabins better maintained, was the OLYMPIC COUNTESS (Royal Olympic Cruises). As well Grimaldi Siosa´s AUSONIA could have had better cabins (there was nn electricity or socket at all in the cabins; you had to take it from the isle with a cable) and service.
With MV THE AZUR I had some problems when I accompanied a group, that Festival Cruises had overbooked the ship and some people (fortunately not of my group) did not have a cabin available, even though they were booked. I had to wait several hours until I could go onboard and to get a cabin for myself and my group was already onboard. It was a bit a desaster because it seemed that the company lost the overview somehow.
But I have to say that, compared to the price you pay for a cruise on one of these ships, everybody should not expect too much of it and so the product was fair and quite well done (except the security-standards).
Otherwise I can´t complain about any other cruise

hello paddy,
our 2 worst cruises was due to food
pretty much. one was on the M/V GRUZYIA (GEORGIA IN ENGLISH PRONOUNCIATION) and the second was
the S/S VERACRUZ.

My sister and I have been on all the same ships with the exception that she took her honeymoon on the Veracruz and said it was a few notches below the others (Emerald Seas, Sunward II, Oceanic (BigRedBoat), Dolphin)in every way.

A lady called Eva Heart lived in my local area until she passed away a few years ago. I'm told that she had a great sense of humor and became a local celebrity. I understand that She used to often joke that she had been on the worst cruise of all time! However, she did not remember much about it as she was only a baby girl at the time!

recalled quite a bit of the disaster.

Yes the Titanic! It's nice to know that Eva had such a good sense of humor about such a tragic event. I'm not sure how old she was during the disaster or how much she remembered? I will have to look it up.

But I do know that opposite where she lived in Chadwell Heath (London, Essex, a mile from myself) a disused victoria Police Station has been converted into a Pub about two years ago. The Pub is was named the 'Eva Heart'. It contains pictures and items on the walls donated by her family.

O.K. back to Paddy's question, has anyone had a really but Cruise?

Hi..worst cruise? easily the Vistafjord. This was back when the QE2 had it's famous overhaul and sailed when it wasn't ready. Well they were rebuilding the cabins etc on the Vistafjord with an otherwise full ship. People were being moved around and our cabin wasn't even finished. There was a majority of German passengers and the ship was geared to them. Interminable announcements in German followed by three words in English. The food was also geared to them with quantity, not quality, being the norm. Service was very poor, and it was obviously an unhappy crew - nobody smiled or said hello.
Anyway, wrote to Olsen the President, who got fired shortly after, and got a generous credit note back. We then used that on the Sagafjord and had an excellent trip. What a difference, good service and food and a happy crew, you wouldn't think it was the same company.

Hello,

Not had a bad one myself - but my least favorite overall cruise would have been RCCL's Majesty of the Seas. The ship was fine but the service was spotty and the food was absolutely atrocious. Not to mention entertainment or lack thereof. I still had a decent time but it was a still subpar.

Least favorite ship was NCL's Seaward (Norwegian Sea)... The quality of construction/fit-and-finish wasn't up to snuff and the cabin was a product of truly stupid design. But the food, service, entertainment, etc. made up for the ugly ship and I had a very good time.

Happy Cruising,
Cruiseny

P.S. the ship was in fine shape - very clean etc. Just rather ugly in some areas (most have been done over at least once since) and had very low construction quality - painted metal decks, some wavy and buckling, cheap cabinetry in cabin, and so on. So not a horror story, and as I said still an enjoyable cruise.

I can't let mention of the Norwegian Sea under "Worst Ever Cruise" go unchallenged. Yes, the ship is a little different, but she feels like a proper ship to me (maybe the steel deck even helps that way). I liked the Song of America a lot, and there are similarities. I have only been on the Norwegian Sea once, but I rate that cruise one of my BEST (out of 28).

Hello,

The worst cruise was Majesty of the Seas. Norwegian Sea was my least favorite ship.

Note she has been redone some since then... And by no means was a bad ship but the standard cabin was pretty awful and I am not a fan of the painted metal decks.

Happy Cruising,
Cruiseny

Last year I went to see the Switzerland from Leisure Cruises which started her 15 days Norwegian fjords cruise from Amsterdam. Nice ship, friendly personnel and trough the ships speakers played some nice welcoming music. Saw the ship being supplied and I enjoyed it as she departed and sailed by. A few days later I heard on the news that the Switzerland was laid up and quarantined, there was an outbreak of salmonella on the ship. So actual I saw the contaminated food being brought on board a few days back. I kind of feel sorry for the passengers and crew then and to bad it also happened on the beginning of the cruise.
So this was probably the worst cruise for many of the passengers onboard the Switzerland last year.

I also saw a documentary on the BBC (I believe it was called cruises from hell) about the overhaul crossing of the QE2 before she started her world cruise. I cant understand why they let passengers onboard during that crossing. Flooded bathrooms, cables hanging from the sailing, buckets of water in the hallways, furniture stacked in the hallways, big containers on the aft decks, carpenters walking around, closed of public area’s, etc, etc. The QE2 was a mess and I wouldn’t be onboard then.

Best wishes, Onno

The Bolero!

We sailed on her a couple of years ago. She rocked AND pitched constantly. My husband and I had to take Bonine the entire cruise. The food was terrible, also! Never again!

Now that we have discovered HAL, we probably won't be sailing on another line.....

Hi Ruth,

It was your review and several others which caused me NOT to book a Festival cruise.

To me it is not so much the size of the ship, but the passenger/ton ratio. Anything under 35 pass/ton gets claustrophobic.

If you like HAL, you may do well by Celebrity or Costa.

My worst Cruise regarding the Food was in 1982 with SS FEDOR SHALYAPIN, 18 Days to Africa.

My worst Cruise regarding the Cabin was in 1990
with ROMANZA, 16 Days to Atlantic Islands.

My worst Cruise in Friendlyness, Service and Competence of the Cruise Direction was in 1993 with ASTRA I, 13 Days to Iceland and Norway.

Hi, Rotterbrandt!

We have sailed on the late (and sorely missed by us!) SeaBreeze and (most recently) the Maasdam and loved it! I don't believe they used the stabilizers on the Bolero as much as they could/should have.

We are toying with the idea of a Celebrity cruise out of Charleston, SC if they offer them again. I know they have a few coming up this winter, but we unfortunately, won't have the $$$ to go then. Oh, well!

Just out of curiosity - why do Charleston departures especially appeal to you?

We lived there for a year and haven't really had a chance to get back there to visit. If we took a cruise departing from there, we could kill 2 birds with 1 stone.
