My wife and I are taking a cruise in September of 2000 to Hawaii, from Vancouver B.C. on the Carnivals (Jubilee). I was wondering just what you can get away with on the formal nights in the dining room. Slacks and a tie? Or do you need a sportcoat too? Or heaven for bid, a suit. All of which I will have to buy.
And for my wife. How about dress slacks and a dressy top or sweater with low heals? Or does she need some type of evening or cocktail dress? Please be specfic. I can't seem to get a straight answer from anybody. on the other boards.

Minimally, a jacket with the tie. Suit would be more appropriate, Carnival or not.
Why not plan a suprise "date" with your wife and have a shopping trip to chose outfits for one another to wear on the formal evening? You've got time to save up and consider it part of your trip budget. That's what I,m planning to do with my husband before we sail in January!

We have just returned this week from an eleven day cruise on NCL Norwegian Wind. Formal nights were mainly suits, but I must admit you see some that don't make much effort. I wore a suit one night and a pants suit the other night, my husband wore his suit. Didn't see as many tuxedo's as on RCCl
hope you enjoy cruising is a great holiday.

After having been on the Triumph, I would say that with Carnival, "formal" is as formal as you'd like it to be. I saw people wearing cocktail dresses and sport jackets, and then some (myself included) were dressed to the nines with evening gowns and tuxedos. The only reason I chose to go all the way as far as the formality is concerned is because that's what I've been brought up on as far as cruising is concerned, and quite frankly, I like it.

I recently sailed on Carnival's Inspiration. You definitely need a sport coat, although most passengers wore a suit. There were some in tuxedos, although a suit seemed more appropriate, given the dress everyone else wore.
An interesting observation I had about Carnival is that the dress code for the dining rooms isn't any less formal than other lines, but they don't require you to dress up for the rest of the ship. On NCL, for example, formal night in the dining room means formal night all over the ship. But on Carnival, I noticed a lot of people dressing up for dinner, and then changing for the remainder of the evening.

To Bluekiwi.

We are planning a trip to Alaska on the Norwegian Wind. Will be booking in about 2 weeks, but still looking around.

Please let me know how the Norwegian Wind was - food, cabin, shows, etc.
