I don't believe that there has been an official announcement as yet as to which shipyard the contract will be awarded to. Currently, it's said that some yards in Germany and Italy have the edge.

Oh, ok. I recently found out that she was not being built in England. Why is she not being built in England?

Don't know exactly. It could be a money issue.

The last sizable passenger or cruise liner built in Britain was the Vistafjord in 1973. British shipyards in the 1960's suffered from very little investment and troublesome work practaces resulting in the closure of almost every company. Today what is left of the English shipbuilding industry no longer has the expertise or facilities to make large cruise ships like Grand Princess. Besides new ships for the Royal Navy today Britain builds hardly any ships at all. It's not that they don't want to, it's that they can't anymore. Personnally I think it would be great to have the new Queen Mary built in an British shipyard but who could do it ?

Ships aren't built in Britain for the same reason they aren't built in the US - cost.
The first new passenger ships built in the US since the 50's are about to be built in Litton's Pascagoula yard. Trent Lott's home state. In return for paying 1/3 more for two ships than would be spend to built them in Italy, Finland, Germany or France, the new US Lines ships will have a monopoly on traveling between 2 US ports along with the MV Patriot nee Neuw Amsterdam which got a special congressional exemption.

As to which yard will build it - Cunard has not yet selected a bid.

I just spoke with one of the designers of the Queen Mary 2 project and he tells me that the artist impression released to the press of the new ship bares a slight resemblance to the new ship, but it's not precise. He did say that the QE-2ish funnel was acurate, and they will have selected a shipyard by the first of the year, probably in January.

If Carnival is "camp" then I think Gunard will be Kitch...they will decorate the ship to look like it would be from 60s? Should be something from theese days...not from past I think.

Allegedly, they're going to do the interior design a la Titanic. Considering the market they're in, I would call that appropriate. Anything less would not be fitting with their "ultra-luxury" market status.

Quoting from Ocean Cruise News:
The ship's ambiance will reflect a high style and grace with grand staircases, expansive promenades, elegant grand restaurants and large public rooms. Some of the features already revealed include a Heritage Trail highlighted by momentos and artifacts from Cunard's 160 year history and an onboard Maritime Museum of liner history; a pub with its own onboard microbrewery; an advanced Computer Learning Center and an extravagant spa and health center.
Three-quarters of all suites, staterooms and apartments will have large private balconies. The ship is expected to have one staff member for each 2 passengers.
No details were disclosed as to deployment of the Project Queen Mary when it is completed. The ship will sail transatlantic for a portion of the year, but as it will be too large to transit the Panama Canal, its worldwide scope of operation will be more limited than the QE2.
Personally I think these ships are just getting too large. I also read in the Cruise News that HAL is going to build 2 new ships at 951 feet long, among the longest passenger ships in the world with 80 percent of the cabins having verandahs. Too many people. I like the 1250 size. Oh yes the new ships will also have exterior elevators.
