I need to correct myself from the error I put forth in my Triumph review some months back. In it, I stated that all-wood decks have not been seen on any ship in years. Well, in my explorations, I've seen pictures of the Paradise with all-wood decks, and it occurred to me that maybe all of the Fantasy-class ships are that way. If so, I must apologize for my not having all the facts. Can anyone corroborate this?

Joe at PwC - I believe that all HAL ships have teak decks - Green - am I right I know the Rotterdam V did so probably the others do too.
Yes, also the verandah decks are wooden. I correct myself - All HAL outside decks are teak/wooden.

Celebrity Cruises also has a lot of wooden decks, including their private verandahs.

Hi Sympatico - as far as I know all outside decks on HAL ships are teak - don't know about the verandahs (have never travaelled in that category) but as they're outside, I think they'd also be teak - will have to check up on it. Anybody out there have such information?

Joe,

I was on the Triumph during the Thanksgiving week. I had a cat. 8 cabin with private verandah. The verandahs are teak. It does have wooden decks. In fact, The Triumph has wooden deck on all of her outdoor decks.

Actually, Eric, I was referring to 100% wood on all exposed decks. When I was on the Nordic Prince and the Crown Princess, significant portions of decking were covered in astro-turf. On the Triumph, there was only a small amount of this, and it was only on the jogging track.

I wish I could enjoy some of the wood decks on the Promenade decks. Normally, this is where people choose to smoke their gagging cigars.

Joe:
You're right about the wooden decks on the Fantasy class ships -- they all have them. When I sailed on the Inspiration, I bought a copy of the book commemorating the inaugural cruise in 1996. This is what it said about the decks:

"Twelve months were spent on the research, selection and negotiations for the wood used on the open decks. The specifications required the finest natural grown Burma teak obtainable, grained between 45 degrees and 90 degrees and kiln dried. This task has been very difficult due to the recent political situation in Myanmar and no efforts were spared to obtain this unique type of wood in time for completion of the vessel. Each and every plank was inspected at the mills in the Far East with only the highest quality being selected. The accepted planks were stamped by hand, one by one, by a quality control surveyor appointed by the owner. The Inspiration required the largest order ever issued for a single ship: 20,000 cubic feet of wood to cover 105,000 square feet of open public decks with planks two inches thick."

I was impressed by the wooden decks on the Inspiration, especially since I noticed the Norway uses a lot of blue astro turf.

It's certainly a nice thing to see, because that's the way they did it in the Golden Age. I kind of like that little trip back trough time. Granted, the amenities for the average joe in those days were pathetic.....I wouldn't have been able to afford the upper class, but maybe second, or tourist class.....

Teak decks, in Europe suchs a advertising would cause a "scandal"...from rainforest to luxury ships, rare wood to be cut just for pleasure. Actually that happened when Silja Serenade/Symphony had some wood from rainforest to cover the promenade: they had to apologize the incident and they made promise they would use finnish wood in future if possible.

Actually, while I love the wood decks because of their throwback value, I do agree that the destruction of rainforests for this purpose is a crime. I can't help it - I'm torn.
