Carnival Cruise Lines, a unit of Carnival Corporation (NYSE: CCL - news), has reported that its cruise ship Celebration experienced a fire in an auxiliary generator at approximately midnight on Wednesday, January 12. The fire was quickly extinguished by the vessel's automated Halon system and initial damage assessments and repairs are underway. There are no reported injuries to passengers or crew.

At the time of the fire, the ship was approximately 100 miles northwest of Montego Bay, Jamaica. Electrical and propulsion power has been restored and the Celebration is proceeding to Montego Bay under its own power with arrival scheduled for Wednesday afternoon. From there, guests will disembark the ship and arrangements are being made to provide them with hotel accommodations and/or flight arrangements back to New Orleans, the ship's port of embarkation.

The Celebration left New Orleans Sunday, January 9, 2000, carrying 1,586 guests and 667 crew on a seven-day western Caribbean voyage to Montego Bay, Grand Cayman and Playa del Carmen/Cozumel.

Guests aboard the Celebration will receive a full refund, as well as a free seven-day Carnival cruise.

Has NCL's bad luck of last year been transferred to CCL?

I'm wondering if these cruise lines are running their ships to hard without enough preventive maintenance programs in place. It seems like there is no downtime each year for these ships so that a thorough maintenance and stress inspection can take place for each and every major component / system. Seems rather short sighted on their part as the frequency of failure will only increase with each year and the loss of a week's income plus the free week given to the passengers involved equals two weeks downtime.
Why not schedule it. Two occurrences in a one year time frame and you have doubled your revenue loss. 4 weeks vice the 2 week scheduled yearly maintenance down frame.

I just booked on the Celebration last week for May 21, 2000. I called my Travel Agent and he sent me a press release that says next week has be canceled too, with passengers getting all money back and a 50% discount on their next cruise. If anyone has been on the Celebration, please let me know what to expect. This is my daughter(who is 16) and my first cruise.

Gosh, Laurel, judging from the all the press lately about Carnival's ill-fated voyages, I'd guess you can expect to wear your life vest a lot.... If I were you, I'd cancel your booking with Carnival, and rebook on another line that does better regular maintenance on its ships.
