Okay, we have all weighed in our opinion on how the contemporary (90's) cruise ships lack the graceful lines and sheer of the classic liners, but IMHO, some of the ships of the 90's are surprisingly good-looking (I did the VIKING SERENADE in the early 90's, and trust me, she's won't be on this list, though I did have a good time). My picks are:

MINERVA - really neo-classic styling, and very well-balanced profile
ORIANA - same, and the tiered after decks are great
GALAXY/MERCURY - you can't confuse them with any other ship out there except each other
DISNEY MAGIC/WONDER - great looking bows, not short and stubby, and the two funnels look good
CROWN DYNASTY & SUPER STAR GEMINI - totally modern, but graceful and lean looking.
I guess you can tell I like the ships that successfully combine the old with the new
I can't think of any more, and I would love to know other opinions...

Rex,
Have you seen STAR CRUISES ~ "Sagittarius-class" vessel's Artist photo? They will build in Meyer Werft and launch in 2003-2004. I like these design very much....very modern, many and big windows.......16 decks high and 317m in length...The longest mega cruise line build in this monent! (SUPER)

Rex, I agree with you. The ships you mentioned just have great designs.
Anyway, I would like to add Celebrity´s ZENITH, HORIZON and CENTURY too. The way how they used to combine the hull with the blue lines is just great. It makes an actual big ship looking streamlined and compact.
As well it represents the colors of the flag from its original owning-country, Greece.
The interior decor combines the modern facilities with classic surroundings.
All together very well thought out !

I think Disney have achieved a good optical optical illusion with their two ships.

After all, they are mega ships, not unlike many others. However, the black hull, stern and false funnel creates the 'look' of an Ocean Liner of bygone days.

If they had painted them white - the illusion would not have worked so well!

I really like P&O's Aurora. There is something very chic about her.
But I really love Celebrity's Century/Galaxy/Mercury trio. The funnel logo is just so fab.

The only thing the Disney ships look sort of oceanliner like is with their bows. It resembles the S/S NORMANDIE.

I think I'd have to say Peter Deilmanns MS DEUTSCHLAND. Doesn't quite look like she had been built in 1998.

Eric, or anyone- where can I find a picture of the new Star Cruises ships due out in 200-2004? I have been looking all over the net for them?

I agree that the Celebrity ships are nice looking, but have you seen their new Millennium? She is awful! Her hull is a solid blue, they have given her YELLOW stripes on the hull, and YELLOW accents on the funnel logo, and for some odd reason they topped the funnel pipes RED! I saw this in an artist rendering of the ship and thought it would not end up on the final ship- but then I saw pictures from the shipyard, and sure enough she is blue, white, red, and yellow. What are they thinking?

Eric - I have seen the big Star ships, and I do think they are attractive. They don't look as bulky as some of the other megaships, like from Princess or Carnival.

Skye, I have seen pics of the MILLENIUM. Recently I received Celebrity's 2000 Carribean brochure, and the ship looks awkward and unbalanced, with TOO MANY private balconies.

Although the Celebrity ships are very nice, they look a bit 'square' in shape to me!

The feature I miss most on the Current crop of 'Mega-ships', is the sheltered deck space along the flank of the ship where you could sit in your deck chair and watch the sea go by. The sea breezes, the flickering sun light, the water sounds as the ship makes its way through the sea, these are the essence of a cruise. The new ships turn in on themselves as if the ocean would intrude on the "Fun Times". You are ten, twelve or fourteen deck above the water before you get an unobstructed view of the ocean. I would hope some cruise line would remember its roots and produce a ship that, can be fun, but yet be a gracious way to travel.

AJL,
If you want to see STAR CRUISES's "Libra-class" & "Sagittarius-class" vessel, I can send to you by e-mail. Because STAR's web now still haven't any information about the new ships.. so you give me your e-mail address to me first, than I send to you. I think you must love their modern design....

Milennium is certainly one of he ugliest, but i disagrre with comments made on Peter Deilmann's MS Deutschland. She is very boxy and slightly like Festival's Mistral.

I agree, Paddy, but I think the DEUTSCHLAND's grand interiors make up for her rather squat and ungainly profile.

Although she is not new, I think the MARCO POLO is very beautiful too.

It's a funny thing...no matter how ugly a ship's exterior is, once you're aboard, you won't notice, because, of course, you can't see her...Since ships are what I do, as it were, and have, ever since I was a kid when I started looking at them and sailing with them, I have seen thousands and sailed in over 80, worked in 8, written 10 books about ships, and am an obsessed collector...My own favorites are mostly gone, but believe it or not, I consider the COSTA CLASSICA and COSTA ROMANTICA externally magnificent...I didn't like their appearance from photos, but after seeing the CLASSICA in person, it was love, of a sort, at first sight. I also found her the most exciting ship I had seen in 30 years, the most interesting ship externally and internally since the MICHELANGELO.
I am also taken with the looks of the CROWN and REGAL PRINCESS, even with their "coffee can" funnels...That said, to my jaded eyes, the most beautful thing I have seen afloat in many a year I saw in Manila last week... that's the M/S PHILLIPINES, the former AUGUSTUS...even though her owners have painted the words "MANILA FLOATING HOTEL & RESTAURANT" on her midships, her gorgeous lines are untouched since the day she was completed at the San Marco yard in 1952.

One could definitely make that case for the Millenium. Certainly, she's outwardly yet another brick. But when I think about how Celebrity is going to use paneling from RMS Olympic in her specialty dining room, I can't help but pine for the experience of seeing it.

I like the Renaissance R-Ships. Granted, they are a little boxy (like almost all new ships nowadays) but they have a nicely balanced profile. The bow and forward superstructure are well proportioned. The dark hull looks good on them. As far as the interiors...Breathtaking! Very classy.

Although I am not as big a fan of Crystal
Cruises as some, I do think their two ships
externally are the most beautiful of the new
vessels. Internally they have their draw-
backs.....those bathrooms on the Harmony
for one.....

I like the look of the Disney ships, but I think their bridges are too bulky. I also think that the Crown Dynasty and Jewel (S.Star Gemini) are good looking ships.

But I think QM2 will take honors as the most beautiful when she is built...I saved the most recent sketch of her posted here to my desktop at work....people come into my cubicle and say, "WOW! What ship is THAT?" I hope she lives up to her hype...the latest version of PORTHOLE magazine is out with the VOTS on the cover. There is also a great article on contemporary and future ship design. Good reading.

Am I the only one that like's the MILLENNIUM ? I love that blue slash white hull and the funnel with the red blue and a big white X outlined in yellow. But I also seem to identify this ship as to a lego ship, is she made of lego's ?
I also like the DISNEY MAGIC but I seen a photo of a stupid doll named goofy hanging on the stern like he was painting the letters, this makes the ship look kinda stupid. I hope that damn doll falls off !

No Draikar,I think she looks fine also and I bet she'll look even better in person.
I wonder if Celebrity will still be giving out passes to Captain Club members to view her in New York in November.Anybody hear anything?

Now,now Draikar, even cartoon characters have feelings... remember Disney's target market.

Actually, while I do not like the Disney exteriors, the interiors of the ships are very nice and the cabins are maybe the best design afloat.
