Shock! Horror!
As one of their most profitable ships, I can't see this happening.

Although NORWAY is a very good classic cruise ship. I also love her. But she is very old, if she is still operating in 2001, I am afraid that will have adversity when she is sailing.

Norway is a very good ship and she needs to be updated, many people who I forgot said she will be scrape because she is too old and like an old half dead horse should be put down, I also read people say she is profitable and is the only ship in her company that has an unrestricted budget of repairs at the end of the year... BUT many people that sailed on her said she is run down and needs much work and she cost's a lot to run and I also heard she lost her flag status for her company to a new ship. Star Cruise will be calling most of the shots and its all up to them but Norway is not scrapped yet and i think many people will try to buy her for cruising and / or hotel use and even if the odds are agents her she can still live like the Britanis that is older then the Queen Mary and was sold to be scrapped 2 times, now she is said to be turned into a waterfront attraction / hotel in San Francisco and the Britanis is not as well known as the Norway so I would not start crying for her yet like I did so many ship that I found out later to be scrapped and yet find still around somehow. I would still sail on Norway even if some people say she smells, she is a fun ship and very beautiful and many many people still love her and pay good money to sail on her.

Brandon......

When you have cruised as much as I have you
realize how many rumors can be heard aboard
any given cruise.....even the crew talks of
things that just aren't true. Take what you
hear aboard ship with a grain of salt. I
remember one rumor I heard on the Rotterdam
in 1966....it was that HAL had bought the
Canberra from P&O. It was said to be a done
deal.....well.........

Brandon....

It may or may not be true. Let us hope that it is not. I still think a "wait to see"
attitude is in order.

SS France was built to last for many more
years than 38-40.

The people who post to this site are ship LOVERS, while the corporate zygote now known as STAR/CARNIVAL/NCL are ship OWNERS, BUSINESSMEN, whose chief concern is the bottom line, our opinions be damned...they will continue to build these huge megaliners that are built purely to earn money. I think you could write a million letters to NCL to save the NORWAY, and it really would not make a difference to them. I am a cynic in my old age (35), but I think it's best to be realistic. The NORWAY is going to be 38 this year, and they have to take that into consideration. Now if they had cojones and true vision, they would build a modified, up-to-date version of the NORWAY (II?), combining old and new to create something really special, like this new QM2 project, but I doubt it.

I just hope I get to sail her before she goes...

I fell in love with cruising when I took my first cruise aboard the Norway. Though she is a wonderful ship and will always have a place in my heart -- she is very old and her age is showing. I hate to see her retired, but I don't think I would cruise on her after being on the newer ships.

Rex; I think that the Idea of a Norway 2 would be good, but It would not be anything like the QM2 project because QM2 is not being built to replace any of the Current Cunard ships, she Is being built to work with them.

I don’t, however think that by building a Norway 2 NCL would be able to capture the atmosphere that the 38 year old Norway has.

Cunard...

I understand that, but part of the NORWAY's attraction is that she is a throwback to the great old ships. That is what people like about her, am I not right?

She basically put NCL up with the front runners in the cruising industry back in 1980. She managed to fit in with the fleet, even become their flagship. She, in spite of her age, is great PR for NCL. I think when people think NCL, they think "NORWAY". At least I do. Building a 1000-foot, 90-100,000 ton, two-funnel NORWAY II would be a splendid idea. She could do transatlantic voyages and cruising. Somebody needs to give the QM2 a run for her money. (Rex is adjusting his soapbox now)

And when you think about it, the QM2 will be virtually in a class by herself in Cunard. Only the QE2 will be able to keep up with her, but only in terms of speed. She will be too large to have a consort, so she could at least have a rival....

Dont you agree?
