Have any of you had a call from your travel agent saying you owed an additional $9.00 a ticket for airfare? We did today - seems the airlines have passed the $9. fee to Norwegian and now we have to pay. We had already paid the cruise in full which included the airfare to Miami, and this is "after the fact" charges because of increasing fuel costs.

That's why my port taxes were $10.00 more than listed in the brochure. It is probably a fuel tax. Never thought of that. Thanks spevans. I asked my TA today and she thought that $224.00 was the price. Isn't that an awful price? We are only going to 2 islands plus HAL'S private island. This is criminal and my TA said they HAL had a lot of complaints about it. Apparently the docking fees in Ft. Lauderdale are very high.

Hi guys! Yes, the cruise lines are passing the additional cost of the port service fees on to you(the consumer). However, port service fees are a totally separate component than the air fuel add on. Initially, when the air fuel add on came out, I know that some cruise lines started charging for it. However, due to the indecisiveness of the airlines(some were charging-some were not), I know that at least one cruise line(RCI of course) decided not to pass the additional cost on...for now at least.

But I know that for all cruise lines, the port service fees have gone up due to the ports actually charging more to berth the ships there. It has NOTHING to do with the air fuel charge.

We were on the VOTS in Feb. and our port taxes were $139.75pp..We also did 2 islands and a private. We've done eastern, western a few times and I know there was'nt that much differance in taxes.Maybe the cruise lines are adding for their fuel charges also or maybe they passed The Ballpark Tax and inc. in your taxes.

The cruise I'm talking about is on Norwegian. Our bill was paid in full for an April sailing when our travel agent called and said that the extra charge was passed from the airline to the cruise line and in turn, they passed it on to us. What erks me is that our bill was already paid in full and now they're tacking on the extra charge.

Sorry folks but this quote is from the cruise line brochure.
" Price guarantee,
Carnival reserves the right to increase published rates and air fare supplements without prior notice. Fully paid or deposited guests will be protected, except for port charges, fuel surcharges, government taxes and other surcharges which are subject to change without notice."

In Royal Caribbean the same or similar statement is made under the heading "What does my price include?".

I'm sure this or similar statements are included in most if not all of the other cruise line brochures as well.

If memory serves correct, this situation arose in the mid seventies. At that time, if paid in full you had the option to cancel and get a full refund.

I remember fuel surcharges in the past. It was a rip off then and is probably one now. They were added to the cost of your package almost as standard, for a number of years.

If you were able to do the math: by knowing how much fuel the jet uses, the price rise of fuel, how many seats the plane has , and the surcharge per head...you would probably find that the charge is completely over the top!

Topgun - recall that - but cancelling a long anticipated cruise for $10 seems a bit drastic - I'd bite the bullet and pay up - skip a shore trip or something.
HAL spells it out in it's General Information section - "Fares/Port Charges and Taxes".

YOU GOTTA READ THE FINE PRINT!

Anyone who would cancel a trip for even a $50 dollar surcharge obviously shouldnt have booked the cruise in the first place because any unexpected costs would be a disaster to them.

Our cruise won't be cancelled due to a $9 surcharge, however, ANY charge above what was contracted for, and paid in full, seems both unfair and at the whim of the cruise line. It makes me wonder how many more times before the sailing date will the price increase?

Having paid in full and then being 'surcharged' would irk me too.

We have, on occasion, been advised to make balance payment a bit earlier than necessary due to a 'possible' airfare increase - thinking back though, it was never on a cruise.

We just got our Cruise/flight documents for 14 days from now and to my great and pleasant surprise there wasn't any additional charge (or surcharge) imposed by the airlines for fuel.
This is east coast to west coast and Hawaii to east coast.
That's one for the good guys!!!!

Just picked up my cruise and air tickets yesterday from my TA all duly paid for weeks ago...no changes at all. My cruise is for May so things COULD change I guess before then. I will keep you posted regarding any extras that may occur.
