I've only travelled on old ships like qe2 and norwegian star and fair princess. What i found is that at night, the ship often creeks and its difficult to get to sleep. Do the new ships creek?

Yes - but maybe not as much, it depends on the sea conditions!

Yes, buy some ear plugs if you cannot sleep. We once had a cabin that had a creek behind a very large mirror and there was nothing we could do about it. Even the new ones creek, but I didn't notice it that much on the Veendam.

Yes, but I once had a Captain tell me "when they don't creak then you have to worry". He said something to the effect that this was the expansion and contraction of materials used in building a ship...that this was natural. At night, however, I sometimes wonder if the ships don't pick up some speed and this is why we notice it more when we're trying to get to sleep. It always seems to happen after midnight!

Foam ear plugs are a really good idea for light sleepers. If it isn't the creaking that bothers you, it could be late night conversation next door or sound seepage from the galley or disco!

I like the creaking. And some rocking at night. It's a sure sign you're on a ship and not at a hotel. I also like the low frequency vibration that almost subconsciously says you're in a mechanical place.

I find that I sleep better on ships than anywhere else in the world. The gentle rocking and the rythmic sounds of the ship I find extremely relaxing.

There is a soothing quality to the sounds that I love.

I understand that Ships often do increase their speed of a night time, after dinner!

Hi...with the really accurate navigation possible today, and with the computers operating everything, the speed is normally set to cover the distance in the required time to the next port. That saves fuel. With some of the newer ships having their dining rooms at the blunt end and with the vibration problems they've had, I can see them trying to alleviate that a bit at dinner time though.

Even the new ships creak. The Grandure of the Seas in it's maiden voyage talked to you
at night.

I tend to like it as well. I enjoy the slow rolling and the sound of the ocean slushing against the ship. I sleep very well on the ship under those conditions, but I think it has a lot to do with the fact we dance every night after dinner.

Brandon

The Norway is the ninth ship I've sailed on and also the oldest(Oct. 1999);however, she is the quietest and smoothest(IMO) ship we've ever sailed. It must be to it's construction, which is of couse an ocean liner! Have a great cruise;-)

The Zaandam didn't creak...she was very smooth. It is normal to have a bit of creaking though and I enjoy it very much. Ditto to what tg_lindo and geno_r said.

I wear earplugs. It's an absolute neccessity for me because I'm a lite sleeper. I also enjoy watching the reflection of the ocean wash against the ship dancing on my ceiling at night.

We have been on the Norwegian Crown and the Wind, Both very quiet, esp. when, later we went on the Norway, Nov 99. She creaked
all night, But the ride was smooth and swells were 10 to 15 feet, the roughest seas we've been in.
