Somebody out there somewhere must have cruised on Fred Olsen's 'Black Watck' in recent years?

What is she like?

I was on the black watch last november when we spent 12 nights cruising the carib. The ship provides excellent food and service but depending on your age, i'm 32, the average age was 50+ and may be a little older than I would have found ideal. But this didn't spoil the holiday at all. The ship is small compared to the super liners of today ncl, rcl, etc but they advertise the personal and homely feel of the ship and I must say this is true. we booked the cruise just 3 weeks before it sailed from Barbados, the cruise had a theme of golf, and included two golf pro's giving free lessons, which I took up and have since bought a set of clubs ! When I cruise I enjoy the thought of meeting people from different countries and cultures, as most of the cruisers on the Black Watch were british I was a bit disappointed. However one of the highlights of the holiday for me was Fred Olsen had invited a guest speaker on to the ship for the cruise, it was Sir Rex Hunt, the govorner of the Falkland Islands during the Argie conflict. He spoke for a total of about three and a half hours about the night of the Argies invaded and the Falkland Islands themselves, this was excellent. I don't know if this is a regular occurance though, having a guest speaker.
So ignoring the hurricane we incounted, the islands we stopped at were generally very pleasing and the ship, we'll has seen better days but I think it's still got character and is OK.

Thanks for the info smt. I'm thinking of taking the Black Watch's Baltic Cruise, this summer.

I'm looking for a more traditional ship/experience. I expected the age group to be upper. Olsen mainly sells to Brits.

What were the cabins like? Which grade did you have? How about the food and entertainment? What is the decore like modern or traditional?

Malcolm....get the 'European' brochure from Orient..the Marco Polo is doing the Baltic/Scandinavia this summer. A real ship with good food/service etc....peter
