Now I am confused - what is your point?

Why should any ship be scrapped?

I really don't understand why you think that Mistral and Fair Princess (!!) should be scrapped!

If a ship is ugly (Mistral), so what, then it is, let it be, don't care!

All of the new ship should be scrapped and they could use the steel to make a few good ones!

(Don't panic, especially the Destiny & Voyager fans, I'm only joking!)

If a ship is making money, people enjoy travelling on her and she meets safety and environmental standards let her keep sailing. Fair Princess falls meets all the above criteria. When it comes to appearance I think that the world might be a better place if ships like Mistral or Aida hadn't been built, but that's life. The sad thing about scrapping old ships like Canberra or Norway is that they are like works of art, something which would be much harder to say of new cruise ships. Now, how many of you would want to pull the Empire State Building or the Statue of Liberty down??????

Aussie 1-Very well put! We should be able to sink some service levels, or transfer vessels to lines that could make them pearls again.

In this respect, ships are like people...as we age the outside may still look pretty good but it's all the little bits inside that keep the Doctors busy.
i.e. it's probably costing to keep the boilers going on the Fair Princess, let alone all the electrical/plumbing services etc. And the problem is once you have to open something up to repair it you can have a real can of worms..where do you stop...peter

RCCL'S Viking Serenade....too old, and was not even a cruise ship before!
Replace it with Monarch of the Seas..by the way, I have heard that this was possible, anyone know if this is true?

I went on both the Holiday and Viking Serenade to compare, and Holiday was a hell of a lot better! V.S. is too small and old, if they put a bigger ship in its place, RCCL would make more $$$.

I took a cruise from San DIego to Ensenada and back on the Viking Serenade in 91. She was no beauty (as a matter of fact, she is quite ugly), and the dining room was a bit gaudy, but the food was excellent and I ate and drank myself silly! Credit RCCL for at least trying to make a silk purse from a sow's ear...she is the perfect size for the short trips she makes. I heard here she was for sale...I believe I read it in Cruise News.

But she is VERY top heavy, rolls even in the calmest of seas. And I was on Navy ships, so I know about rolling.

Cunard, I had a 1968 Canary yellow Volkswagen Convertible that I loved. I also had a 1975 Chevy conversion van (with portable sin bin) that was a classic. It broke my heart to part with those vehicles that were at the time such a big part of my life. But I couldn't keep them on my front lawn, or continue to maintain them beyond thier normal life span. They had to go. Yes, keep a sample of the period as a museum but let the rest go.

Viking serenade was indeed a cruise ship...sort of, as the Scandinavia then the Stardancer, then finally the Viking Serenade. She was a Car ferry, but carried passengers on longer voyages. I was amazed at the transformation from car ferry to cruise ship which Royal Caribbean was responsible for. I use to visit the Viking Serenade before her transformation, and then I went aboard her in San Diego, where they did the transformation in the shipyard, to see her progress. They cut off her original bow and built a new sharper bow, and they also added the Viking Crown Lounge. A lot of work went into making her as much like a cruise ship as possible. I'm not crazy about her boxy looks, but then again most of the new ships look like this now. I was even there for her christening, Woopi Goldberg christened the ship. I even sat at the next table over from Woopi in the dining room. I don't think Viking Serenade is too old, however, I think Royal Caribbean could do better on the three and four night cruises out of Los Angeles with a bigger newer ship.

The thing is...who is going to pay to look after all this junk. Passenger ships are no different to tankers, cargo ships, or even warships...they wear out, become uneconomic to operate, and just like you and me, end up in the boneyard....peter

To REX:
Do you know what will take Viking Serenade's place?
I heard Monarch of the Seas might, is this true? (I love that ship (along with Soveriegn and Majesty) those ships look big, and the Viking Crown Lounge is extremely high up on these) I hope its true.

You may be right about the Independence, jwine. I believe I remember the Captain saying the Independence will be retired in a few years because she won't meet regulations since she has no sprinkers. She is a beautiful ship with a lot of history and apparently still servicable due in part to the fact that a lot of equipment aboard her is actually from the Constitution. I hope she doesn't meet with either the Constitution's planned or actual fate.

To RMS, I has been nine years, so I don't know. But she's fine for short cruises, and frankly, I don't know who else could deal with her, maybe Commodore or Premier. I'd prefer Commodore to buy her...

Dolphin IV, a Canaveral Cruise Line ship. This 54,000 vessel pulls up anchor from Cape Canaveral (FLA/USA). It's a pile of junk. Where else can you take a 3/night cruise to Nassau COST? = $199 for first passenger and a Dollar for second passenger? I'll tell you what we saw when he docked in Nassau, Bahamas - freighters! It was horrible. The ship was worse - the cabin was approx. 6x12 ft. and roaches were in the halls. I vote scrap, line and all!

The Dolphin IV that left from Pt Canaveral?
The bath was so small....How small was the bathroom? The shower curtain stuck to my backside. Trust me, I'm NOT a big person. The mattress....mattress (no box spring) was 2 inches high. I could see the stripes through the thin sheets. My cabinmate had to back out to the door and let me pass to enter the bathroom. The sink was the size you'd find in small RV. There was no phone in our room and TV - forget about it! AND we had an outside cabin. The food...oh, I can't go on.....When we arrived in Nassau there was one vendor on the dock with a few T-shirts. It was a lovely sight watching the freight ships load and unload. I went approx. 18 months ago. NEVER AGAIN!

The Carnivale of Carnival Cruises began
life as the Empress of Britain. She became
Queen Anna Maria of the Greek Line in 1964.
She was later sold to Carnival who in turn
sold her to Royal Olympic Cruises to sail
as the Olympic. She has been sold again and
the last I heard she was sailing as Topaz
for a UK company. I sailed on her many times
as QAM out of Baltimore....a friendly ship
with a good Greek crew.

I think the Westerdam is on her last legs, and will soon be at least sold, if not scrapped. She was a stopgap at best for HAL, and the stretch caused more problems than it solved.
