Barryboat was nice enough to submit the following photo's from his recent voyage on HAL's Zaandam...

Here is an interesting view of the bulbous bow on the Zaandam while we were at anchor at Half Moon Cay.

These are two gentleman that I had a business meeting with while on the Zaandam. This is the only photo I have of the organ in the lobby. It takes up the whole three deck high lobby. I think it's too big and kind of ugly, it looked like it was made of plaster of paris.

Here's the side of the ship while we were at sea. I like these types of photos. I had my little video camera on this trip, so I didn't take as many Photos of the ship and her interiors as I would have liked.

I had a chance to sit and chat with Mr. Kirk Lanterman about some ideas.

Here's the Marco Polo alternative dining room.

Here's a shot of the new Zaandam from one of the tenders.

Thanks Barry.

Great photos, Barryboat. Not a very good one of Kirk, though. What were you doing, hanging over the side of the ship when you took that one picture? Are there more?

Barryboat and Joe--
Thank you guys SO much. The pictures look great! I happen to really like pipe organs, and this one looks fine to me (even though I can't see it all). I hope that HAL arranges to have it make music from time to time. I'll probably be standing around listening to it whenever it is playing on our first cruise this August.

Thank you Joe for posting the pictures and a special thanks to Barryboat for taking them. Do they play the organ during the cruise or is it for looks?

There was an article about the Zaandam in today's travel section of the Boston Sunday Globe: While the Zaandam shares features with its sister ship, the Volendam, it has a bit livelier feel to it, especially with its music-themed decor. The music begins in its central atrium with a 22-foot-tall pipe organ. While most ships with atriums fill them with ornate art or waterfalls, Holland America is offering something not only unique but very much in style with its Dutch heritage.

"This organ is an inspiration from Holland, but also from South America and Spain. We've drawn from several cultures to bring life to it," said F.C.J. Dingemans, the ship's principal designer from the Netherlands. "If you travel to Spain and South America, you will see elaborate church organs, with carved angels and music and curls. It is a joy to see the organ in those cathedrals. At the same time, we mixed this idea with the mechanical dance organs, which were developed around 1900 when real band musicians became too expense and were replaced by mechanical music."

So it sounds like the organ WILL play, and the music theme explains the autographed guitars and other instruments that confused some people.

Hey, thanks Joe for posting these photos. To answer a couple of questions, the Zaandam, and all the of the Statendam class ships have a little catwalk or wing that is built into the hull and like a drawbridge swings out from the hull so the crew can monitor docking proceedures and also see the anchor etc. The picture of the bulbous bow was taken from that wing.

The organ did follow the music theme throughout the ship but I felt that it was too big. It filled the entire atrium area. It also looked a bit cheap. There was a keyboard at the base, but I'm not sure if it was a functional organ. I sat there and pushed a few buttons, but nothing happened. It could be an electronic keyboard with some speakers built into the organ structure, but I don't think it's a real organ like in a church...it was too fake looking upclose. I think it was more of an artistic piece.

I wish I took photos of the engine room I kick myself now. I did run my video camera all the way through the engine room, which was fascinating. I like exploring the mechanical areas of ships. I saw the big diesels and the electric motor and the shafts. Being a brand new ship the engine room was spotless.

I also had a buddy of mine take a picture of me up in the crows nest tower of the Norway, but from such a distance it was hard to see me. I tried to get up into the forward funnel of the ss Norway to get a unique photo standing on one of the wings of the funnel. That would have made a great picture!!! But all the hatches were locked which lead to the funnel casing. I like unique photos of ships as some of you may know.

Anyways, back to the Zaandam, I thought she was a beautiful ship and built very well.

Hey now you know what Barryboat looks like.

Barryboat: Do you think that it is ever possible for a person (like myself) to get to tour the engine room! Who would I ask?

K&K - If you are on a HAL ship, check at the Front Desk, the day after boarding (they are too busy the first day) to see if they will be having tours of the Engine Room. My husband and I were very fortunate when we were on the Westerdam, as the Chief Engineer was a good friend and he took us on a tour. Pretty noise down there. After the ship came back from stretch, my husband and our friend had an extensive tour with this same CE. If they are having tours on the ship, they take your name and then call you or leave a note in the cabin as to where and what time to meet. Usually a Junior Engineer does the tours.
Barryboat - who was the CE?

With regard to whether the organ plays music, I read in a review on another board that on the May 6th inaugural cruise, the organ was supposed to play every 15 minutes. But for some reason, at that time it was not working from its roll, and would only play from the keyboard. One of the passengers volunteered to play the organ from the keyboard at noon each day. The volume was very low, the reviewer noted. This leads me to suspect that it may be an electronic organ with pipes that are not functional. I don't really know. I certainly plan to find out by the end of my cruise, if not before. The mystery is afoot: The Case Of The Playing Decorative Organ!

Well the folks who built the organ are pretty proud of it...

Here's a blurb from their web site (note the ship was delivered much later than originally scheduled) and a pricture of the organ.

"At our firm we are now busy building a large chromatical organ.
(see photograph)
It is ordered by the Holland-Amerika-Line.
The organ will be placed on a cruise ship, MS Zaandam. In july 1999 the organ must be ready. It is a pleasure to announce that FR. Decap, Herentals is willing to build the electronic system. The organ will be played by midi floppydisk system. This firm was one of the first to build mechanical organs played by this system."

Hey Barryboat,

Great pictures, nice ship. The organ is a
nice piece of ornamental art. It looks like
most of the casework is baroque like
so many of the organs in Bavaria (S Germany)

It would be a shame if it were strictly
decorative and not playable. Barryboat, you
didn't say how many manuals it has.

Some of you may not know, but the Britanic
was to have a huge fuctional organ before
she was put in service as a hospital ship.
Oh well, if they can put in rock climbing
walls and ice rinks then they can install
something worthwhile as well.

Thanks again Barryboat, the pictures were
great !!

kbozman.

Bonjour Barryboat!
Thanks for sharing your pictures. Some very nice shots.

Enjoyable to see you in the environment you love. I must also admit to you how much we have enjoyed your dancing on your profile photo. My wife loves to show your dancing picture of you to the grandchildren. That picture has made you a real big "HIT" at our home. I think the shorter hair and the beard suits you, and we all tend to put on weight more easily as time goes on. (Especially when eating the spectacular foods while cruising!!) Maybe we should all be on the dance floor more...Including me!!

Thank you once again for your fine photos!!!

Your friend,

Flutuant nec mergitur

Nice photo's, thanks for letting us see them. The first photo of the Zaandam with the bulbous bow looks odd because the waters look so clear that you can see right down to the bottom.
