I just heard on the news about a fire onboard Holland America's Nieuw Amsterdam! From what I understood, there was damage to 10-20 cabins. They are in Glacier Bay Alaska and the coast guard is working to see if it is safe to let the ship continue to Juneau, or off load the passengers in Glacier Bay. There was one injury. A man tripped while going to his muster station and they think suffered a heart attack. The fire was in the crews quarters. No public rooms were damaged. They might let the ship continue it's full itinerary. They said the ship was recently sold to another company, and was on one of it's last cruises for Holland America.

Mercy - thanks for letting us know. I have forwarded this info on to my CO friend in England - he is rejoining the ship this coming week-end and I am sure has not heard about the fire.

This vessel has a full schedule of Alaska cruise planned for June/July/August. She then will sail to Australia for use as an accomodation ship under charter during the Olympics. After that she sails to drydock for conversion to Patriot for Hawaiian sailings. During a refit in early May in Victoria B.C., Canada most if not all of her crew underwent extensive fire fighting control training, conducted by the Navy and Coast Guard. Perhaps equal to the most extensive and best training available worldwide. This facility is utilized by Naval and Merchant Marine fleets of the world. Yet again we as observers of a fascinating industry see that when crews are properly trained, and vessels adequately equipped, the happenings common to any industry are correctly dealt with while at sea. Don't let hyper-ventalated, nor hysterical reports put you off sailing on almost all of todays cruise fleet. They are all manned by professionals, doing a great job. Incidents happen; and if dealt with correctly the impact to passengers is minimal.

Grant, you said it correctly - I would never hesitate to sail with HAL as I have seen the fire crew in action, not thankfully in a fire emergency, but in a few medical evacuations and they are TOPS. They are well trained and know their job.
Mercy said "a man tripped going to his muster station and suffered a possible heart attack". He was probably one of those who hadn't tied his life jacket or who was dragging it behind him and tripped over the ties. This I have seen many times.
Mercy - I love those Rogers chocolate also, and now we can get them in Toronto area.

Grant... Thanks for the info. The T.V. news was very vague about it. They said it was recently sold to another company for 116,000,000 American dollars!
The ships are much safer than they used to be.It makes me feel much better to see ceiling sprinkers in the cabins. I noticed from your profile , that you are from Victoria! We were just there on Saturday. We came in on the Vision of the Seas. It was really a nice day. The band and choir playing on the Parliamont Building steps and all the boats in the harbor had their port flags flying, for Victoria Day! I was born and raised in Washington State and now live about an hour North of Seattle. I have been to Victoria many times and plan to go back in a few weeks. Love those Rogers chocolates
Lovely town!
