I have just read on a very reliable web site that the 3rd millinnium-class ship will be named Summit. Can this be correct? It just does not seem like a name in character with the line. The 2nd millinnium-class ship is named Infinity, and the 4th remains unnamed at this time. Can anyone confirm this new name?

Hello Skyej,

Acoording a well documented press magazine I use to read they WOULD be CONSTELLATION and CENTURION.

I've got the Celebrity Brouchure for Jan 2001 - March 2002 in front of me! Fleet: Century, Galaxy, Horizon, Mercury, Millenium, Zenith, Infinity and Sunmmit.

It looks like the three newest ships will all be based on the 'Millenium' design. The tonnage, deck plans and passenger capacity are the same. Each has an identical computer generated picture. Mind you they can't all have an 'Olympic' Dinning Room, can they?

I think Summit is an odd name too!

Geez, I hope that's not the name! It's just about as exciting as watching paint dry .
Constellation actually stays with the theme of their other ships. I wonder if we polled the board, how many would chose Constellation or Summit? I cast the first vote for Constellation. Vote up,everyone!

regards,

Bob

- I agree CONSTELLATION is, according me, a nice name, although an US aircraft carrier (CVA 64) already bring this name.
- CENTURION seems not very pleasant for me and quite strange too (why Centurion?...and CENTURY, quite similar but far better already exists in the same company)
- SUMMIT: hmmm... not exceptional, rather average. SUMMUM would be better, altough they sound both rich of promises ...or a bit pretencious :-)

Anyway, they named their ships like they 'll want and I repeat, CONSTELLATION and CENTURION are only presented as hypothesis in my magazine.
Bye.

I had hoped that Celebrity would follow the trend of naming their ships after celestial bodies- like Mercury. How about Venus (planet and greek goddess)- that would be a beautiful name for a ship.

Maybe her artwork will all be of mountains?

SUMMIT really doesn't sound all that bad. I'm more interested in how the ship looks, and that I would get my $'s worth if I sail on it. Boy, Celebrity sure is growing pretty fast!

SUMMIT goes along with my general opinion
of Celebrity Cruises......they seem to like
a generic product which is how I feel about
their ships. I am sure others disagree very
strongly.....that's why there are many and
varied cruise lines.

2kewl4u, externally Summit will look identical to Millenium and Infinity. In my opinion, this design is the most attractive yet, of the Celebrity fleet.

Yes Celebrity are growing fast. They have created a very good reputation, very quickly.
Nal, you are right about the 'Generic' approach. Celebrity seem to be sticking to a similar design for their ships, but each 'class' is bigger and a little more spacious than the type before. I suppose P&O, RCL, Carnival and Princess are all now doing this to an extent too?

I suppose, if you reach the "Summit", you lived up to your personel EXPECTATIONS! I also see that they might think that this name will attract younger, more athletic people. It sounds like an S.U.V to me! I like the name for a car, but not for a ship. I do like Constellation though. I am glad they didn't stay with Millennium I,II, and III. What I have seen in pics so far, I think I will like the ship's decor. Some of the rooms remind me of ones on Holland America ships.

I guess as long as their product remains consistent, I'll be happy! BTW, I think your handle is EXCELLENT, 2KEWL4U!

Yes, I was joking! The other two ships have not yet been completed.

They will all be more or less identical apart from the decore.

Hmmmmm....a pity Celebrity has no sense of tradition...they could have named at least one of them MERIDIAN, after the lovely first ship they had...I wonder why they did not do that...she came to Philly a couple of times, and oh, was that a handsome ship...

Rex,

You have just jogged my memory about Meridian, you are so right about her being a fine ship, we seen her in Bermuda in 94, and I even have some video off her, I think I will go and just get it out and have another wee look at that fine ship, and what a sad end, I am positive there was no need for her sinking (that was discussed before on this board and some interesting theories were posted)....

Cheers M.

I know, Scottylass, she was simply lovely. Methinks her Italian ancestry (the hull shape) is what made her so beautiful. What was she like to sail on, can you tell me?

Hi Rex,

No unfortunately we never sailed on her, we were in Bermuda on a land trip, and were on the Hamilton Sound Ferry as I saw her sitting at Kings Wharf I started to video her and have quite a wee bit of footage, we then went and looked at her in awe from Kings Wharf, I think it was then that we decided we must try a cruise.

On that trip in Hamilton we saw docked, Song of America, Vistafjord, Dreamward, Horizon, and Zenith, there was just something magical looking at those ships docked right by Front Street in Hamilton. They close off Front Street on the nights that the ships are docked and there is such a carnival like atmosphere with bands, performers, roundabouts for the kids to ride on, we were looking up yearningly at the lights all twinkling in the lounges and people on board and thought how wonderful it all looked, so the next year we took to cruising, and from then on in were well are truly hooked.

I also watched a programme on TV about the sinking and there was actual footage of what happened which belonged to a passenger, and to me the ship should have been saved, but as I say this was already discussed previously on this board, and there were some heated posts on this subject, so I do not want to say too much about it.

Cheers
M.

I'm also a big Meridian fan, having sailed on her many, many times. However, I have to agree with Celebrity's rationale behind not re-using that name which is due to the fact that they are "a company that looks to the future, not the past but does not forget it's origins".

As for the name Summit, I like it. I posted this in another board, but thought I would also do so here:

From the American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language:

Meridian: 4. The highest point or stage of development of anything; Zenith

Horizon: 2b: The intersection with the celestial sphere of a plane through the center of the earth and perpendicular to the line connecting the Zenith and the nadir.

Zenith: 3.The highest point of any path or course; a point of
culmination;peak;SUMMIT;acme.

Summit: 1.The highest point or part; the top; 2. The highest degree of achievement or status Synonyms: ...Zenith...climax

Scottylass, I totally agree. There's something inexplicable that happens when I pull up next to a ship, especially one that's all lit up as you say, where people are walking around up on deck, and all the flags are flying. I've been in Bermuda 4 times, but only once by ship, and I can agree that seeing the ships all docked like that along Front Street is an awe-inspiring sight. It just makes you have this intense urge to want to be there.

BigUFan,

I also think that when you are on a ship (any ship) it is such a great priviledge, I always thank my lucky stars that I am able to be there in that position, and its a tremendous feeling standing at the rail entering and leaving a Port, any Port, watching people looking up at this huge moving entity arriving/leaving, yes that's what being on a ship makes it all so special (to me anyway), I have many other reasons of course.

Cheerio - M.

Ooops, I have strayed from the Original Topic of Naming a Celebrity Ship, so to get back on track, maybe it would be nice if Celebrity could link some new ship names into the country of the original founder eg Chandris and Greece, for example "Santorini" sounds quite nice, of course maybe the present companies do not want to look back but to the future, but in doing this they seem to be coming up with some not so very nice names. I think it was great when the ships of yesteryear were named after countries and places eg: SS United States, France, Bremen etc spring to mind.

Cheers - M.
