From what I have seen it appears that Celebrity has designed a beautiful new ship (on the inside). However, I must say the exterior of the Millinnium is terrible. Why has Celebrity choses such a bizaar paint scheme? Why did they not keep with the handsome design of the previous ships- with bold blue and white hulls. The Millinnium has a blue hull with yellow racing stripes, red lettering on the stern saying "gas turbine" and red caps on the funnel, forward antenna, and aft vent. Frankly, the look is far too tacky for such a classy cruise line. The colors make the ship look like a comic book creation- and the racing stripes and "gas turbine" written on the hull remind me of a teenager's sports car- not a sleek and elegant ocean liner.

Richard Fain, CEO of Royal Caribbean/Celebrity, even said that the use of red was to give the ship an impression of greater speed. Is speed the key element to communicate, or luxury and elegence? This is all something I would expect from Carnival or Premier- but not Celebrity. Finally, the display of the ships propulsion written on the exterior of the hull is a shameless ploy on the part of RCI to advertise their use of more evironmentally friendly engines in the wake of the company's terrible evironmental record. The company has been found guilty of numerous violations, including dumping oil and untreated waste into the ocean. Next thing you know Celebrity will no longer display an X on the funnel, but a recycle symbol. I hope someone gets a clue and rethinks this new look for Celebrity.

Millennium is one nice ship, I would be glad to sail on this racing comic book like ship with shameless ploys.

Actually, I don't entirely disagree with Skyej. I think the Millennium has a very ecclectic look. The designers were really trying to squeeze in as many innovative design themes as possible. The ship looks like it's not finished. I'm not crazy about the huge-thick stripe at the water line. It looks like a giant puzzle with mismatched modular cruise ship parts thrown together. The ship is odd looking to me, but perhaps this is the shape of things to come? I can't quite tell, but has Celebrity done away with the huge dining room windows looking aft over the wake?

The Millinnium still has the trademark dinning room windows overlooking the wake.

I think your right about the ship having too many design elements going on at once. The ship just looks out of character for a premium line like Celebrity. I hope they do not paint the existing Celebrity ships to match.

I agree that Millenium is an odd looking ship, but she is not all that different in overall appearance from other Celebrity vessels - there is a definite family resemblance. I have always found it odd why Celebrity have designed their ships to look so square - all straight lines, right angles and hard edges. Apparently the original duo of Horizon and Zenith were penned by a yacht designer!

First of all I will limit myself to modern cruise ships to be fair. They are all boxy, and not as elegent as older liners- but there are still some very attractive new cruise ships. What I mainly look for is a unity of design, and clean lines. here are a few I think fit that description:

SuperStar Leo & Virgo
Aurora
Oriana
Nordic Empress
Crystal Harmony

Some that are unquestionably ugly:

Norwegian Sky
Mistral
Costa Victoria

Again, we are talking about new modern cruise ships here. By the way, have you seen the drawing of HAL's new ship- she may be very attractive when complete. I am still waiting to see what Princess is currently designing. While HAL and Princess do not have the most beautiful looking ships I will say they are a much more unified and clean design than the Millinnium- if not a bit boxy.

I love the exterior design of Millennium. It's very sleek and slender, and not boxy like some others. The blue and yellow really makes it stand out.

Here's a picture of both the Millennium and the Mercury. I think the Mercury has sleeker lines. Millennium seems disjointed with the extra large overhang at the Resort & Sunrise Deck. The design reminds me of a Barge plateform and hull, with cabins built ontop. I suppose I'll get use to it, but I just think the design is ecclectic, and not quite as smooth.

An observation:

Most Cruise ships look pretty sleek from a distance and they always look sleek in the brochure photographs.

However, if you see them in the flesh, the nearer you get the 'boxier' they seem to get. For example the Mercury can look sleek from a distance, but as you get closet you get to see all those square angles!

...for example, above, Barryboat has posted a 'sleek' looking picture of the Mercury. (The sort that appears in brouchure). Below is a closer picture of her stern(which does not appear in the brouchure):

I think you will agree that she looks like a different ship. This is proof that the Camera does lie!

I agree with Malcolm. But I think an exception is the Destiny class ships. We circled around the Triumph in Grand Cayman, and I think it retains its sleek profile.

You can see the dining room windows and the hull paint job, if you look closely.

Borrowed from the excellent web site: http://sauro.com/Baltic/Baltics.htm

Personally, I believe that the Millennium and the Century-class ships are all quite nice to look at, even with the angular sterns (comparitively speaking). I think that the paint-job adds to a classy look on the Century and Zenith classes - like airlines, cruise lines have more and more recently just painted the hull all white with maybe a small cheatline and a coloured funnel. But Celebrity did more than this. Millennium is essentially a pretty ship, but the paint job is very childish and it could look fabulous in a simple yet elegant paint scheme (It kind of reminds me of the old slogans airlines had on their aircraft in the 50's and 60's eg. StarJet and WhisperLiner - rather tacky on a cruise liner).

Paddy.

I sailed on the Horizon (when Celebrity was still called Chandris) and I found her interior to be totally fetching. She had none of the "big-pazzazz" rooms, or foyers, as I like to call 'em, but had a very charming, warm, homey look, almost like being at a country-club at sea. I liked her exterior appearance as well, save for one thing - the stern. It looked like somebody had chopped it off with a meat-cleaver, and this seems to be the "style" with Chandris/Celebrity. To me, if the Horizon had a rounded stern, her profile would have been very elegant and classy, almost traditional, but that stumpy stern ruined it.

Malcolm, I love the photos! By the way that photo you posted on the Mercury "still" looks way more sleek than that Millennium box, even from that odd angle. I had to laugh at the comment that was made by CB..."LEGOS"! LOL! Don't get me wrong, I'd absolutely love to cruise on the Millennium, or even see it up close for that matter. I am particularily wanting to see the Olympic restaurant.

I'm agree with the ones thinking externally she's ugly and showy. That because both of her shape and her horrible paint-job.
I think too this is Lego's assembly, but the kid who made it was practising rollers with a blind-fold at the same time!

However, however, according the interior pictures we can see here or there, I really enjoyed an important part of her insides.
I'm sure cruise ships like her will have a great success anyway for an crushing majority of customers. You can trust all the decision-makers of the big companies to have done the good choice after serious studies regarding the market.
I think exterior appearance of ships will become a part, one of element of the choice among others, later, when cruising will be as common as buy a car or choose a new sofa.
Bye.

I have only one other comment about my cruise on the Horizon which, like I said, I thought was a very fine ship (save for the chopped-off stern). I found her stability to be rather poor, and I don't know if this had to do with a small draught. Even when she was tied-up in port, she would roll, felt particularly strong up on the Sun Deck. We were fortunate in being upgraded to a small suite on the upper-most accommodations deck, but it did have one drawback our first day at sea (the only full day at sea) when the wind was strong and the seas choppy: she pitched like a bunking bronco. I had the patch, so it didn't bother me; as a matter of fact, I thought it was all rather fun. But many of the passengers were ill, and the lifeboat drill looked like a scene from Stephen King's The Stand. At night, it got worse, rolling added, and because we were on an upper deck, we really experienced it. I had to use our little-cruiser's room, and had to walk across the floor of the cabin on my hands and knees to get to it, for fear of being flung against a wall. By the next day, and all days afterwards, the seas were calm, but she did have a constant pitch or roll, but nothing unmanageable. When we filled out the forms asking for our opinions at the end of the cruise, that was the only criticism I had.

It's nice to hear from someone who enjoys a little pitching and rolling now and then. I, too, find it kind of fun. It's one of those things that reminds you you're on a ship.

When my break from cruising is over I think Millenium will be the first one I go on. Although I think she looks like my kids toys that turn from airplanes and cars into robots.

Is this the future of cruising? Celebrity does like to promote how technologically advanced they are over the others.

Millenium can't say she is the biggest, but she can sure say, "Hey! Look at me!" I mean if Destiny, Grand and Voyager were all docked next to each other in Miami, Millenium would sure get my attention.

Hahaha...CB-"Legos".

I certainly agree with the comments about Horizons stability. When I cruised on her she rolled beyond belief - before we even got out of San Juan harbour! I had only ever travelled on Canberra and Oriana previously, both of which could leave you thinking you had never left dry land. Horizon rolled more in a flat sea than Canberra did in a Force 7 gale in the middle of the Tasman Sea! They don't build 'em like they used to...

The moment that I saw the color yellow with a little brighter blue I said YUK! What are they thinking? But what is going on, is that RCCL couldn't stand to build a new ship with Celebrity's colors. They had to show the the ship belongs to RCCL...hence the RCCL color scheme. The Voyager also has yellow, right? One happy family! But, in my humble opinion, they should save the yellow and blue for their flags, brochure and doc covers.

On August 21st, it will be a full year since I've been on a cruise ship. At this point, ALL ships look beautiful to me! While I, too, have always found Celebrity's ships a bit boxy, the only part of Millennium I have a problem with is how the "break out" for the life boats interrupts the line of the side. The interior shots reflect a really lovely design, however, and I would enjoy seeing her in person.

6 weeks 'til Mercury!
