Does anyone else out there think that most brochure pictures are utterly
inane? Passengers in stupid poses or with the dumbest facial expressions?

This one, courtesy of RCI, circa 1997, takes 1st prize in my opinion.

Ivan (The waiter) looks as though he is lusting and trying to seduce the
photographer.

Millie (The passenger) is ever so thankful for the first plate of fruit she
has ever seen and so impressed that Mario (The Maitre'd) has "saved the
waves"!

Mario (wearing his ubitquous "save the waves button") is wondering why this
insane woman is wearing that stupid hat, not to mention wearing it at lunch!

Aha! Tim Rubacky--I still don't think a lady wearing a hat at lunch is ridiculous. And what else would you have brochures photograph--wet T-shirt contests or torn jeans at Formal night? There still should be an aura, at least, of romance or mystique in the "selling" of cruising. At least that is my opinion, and I probably will always be entranced by that mystique.

If you look at the pictures in brochures and promotional videos closely, they have a couple dozen or so models that they use for the whole shoot. I thought it was funny that they shared clothes in some of them. One woman had a dress on in a shot and the then another woman had the same dress on in another shot, and they all shared this one hat. I would like to see less pictures of models stretched out on a deck lounge chair and more of the ship and ports, myself.

Joe,

I have seen this pic before. I don't have time to search round right now, but I think it is the SS Constitution.

Miss Manners says that it's perfectly fine for women to wear a hat to lunch or tea (but not to dinner), if she's not serving as the hostess. But I noticed something - it looks like our sailing lady is slipping something to the maitre'd -- her room key, maybe, the little vixen? (You know those shipboard romances!)

I do agree about the steward who looks like an extra from an old Hammer film. Obviously, he was the real thing and not a model asked to pose for the shot. If you want to see a good commentary on the use of crew instead of professional models, look at page 171 of Maxtone-Graham's "The Only Way to Cross".

The brochures do seem to feature more of those models and less of the ships themselves. That's why I like web pages that post quality photos of interiors.

Winner, and And what is wrong with pictures of "wet T-shirt contests"?

I might not be persuaded to take the cruise, but I'd sure enjoy the brouchure

A fantastic photo Joe...are you the guy on the right? Tartan jackets were obviously the big thing then!

I'm always very suspicious when I read a 'budget' cruise brochure.

The first half a dozen pages tell us of the 'sheer luxury' and 'indulgence' that is on offer. The photographs show romantic poses of couples, giant cabins and unparalleled dining. This is of course is all highly unlikely on a two or three star ship at a knock down price!

I particularly liked the large photo in the (I think) 1998 Caribbean brochure entitled "Caribbean Twins". It was a computer-generated photo of three Sun-Class Princess ships anchored side by side. Oddly enough, the same passengers and flags (fluttering identically) were featured on all three ships, and one of the ships was the Dawn Princess, at the time not yet completed. Some digital genius duplicated the ship 3 times, and changed the names on the bow.

Actually gizmo didn't get it totally right. The US Constitution would get quite soggy in seawater.

Think we had this picture before - something about the year - pointy toe shoes? - some time ago I would think. Like Gizmo don't have time right now to search. Constitution - pretty sure.

The funniest cruise photos IMHO are by the pool. No crowds and no towels, books, etc. "saving" the lounges. In fact, the ships always look half-booked. Other than that, I don't care how unreal the brochures - they keep me going until my next cruise!

It is not a cruise brochure, but I am always amazed by the Disney Cruise commercial which ends with the mother, father, and little girl on the beach running towards the cruise ship in the distance. Are we supposed to think that they are going to swim to the ship? And of course there are no other people around. Guess they have this cruise to themselves!

I think the most stupid is P&O brochures. They use the same picture of the casino and other places for every ship. I've seen it in the Oriana/Aurora brochure and in the Fair Princess brochure. The picture must be 5 years old! And thats not the only one they copy!
