I would never share with another couple unless you are VERY, VERY good friends. If you do share, this could be the end of your friendship.
What ship are you considering?
We shared a quad with our son and daughter on the Rotterdam V, but the cabin was extremely large. Even though it was large, we had to draw straws to see who would use the shower first, etc. Quads are fine for families, but not for friends. This is only my opinion.
If you don't want to pay a lot for a cabin, go for a lower category inside.

Sympatico is right, Pelicanbabe. Unless you are all very close - and don't mind getting even closer - and are very compatible, laid back and tolerant, you might want to reconsider. Now, if you are all of the above, you won't have any problem and will enjoy the enormous savings. The most I've done in a cabin is three, but we were compatible and it worked out fine. Of course, you're the only one who knows your friends and can decide. If you think it'll be pushing too much, do what Sympatico says and go for two lower-grade cabins, or maybe even look into spending a bit more for a suite that could possible accomodate four. Remember, you can't open the portholes anymore, so there'll be no place to dump the bodies.

Fanatic - never thought of the Suite idea. I believe that the sofa will sleep two and the bed is a King Size, but who gets what? Maybe they will have to take turns or toss for it.

I took the sofa bed in the suite onboard the Horizon, Sympatico, and it was very comfortable! I'd do it again! It was also very much appreciated because one night we pitched and rolled like the dickens, and when I had to literally crawl out of bed and walk on my hands and knees across the floor to the little cruisers room, it was a safe drop because I was lower to the floor. My cabinmates, in their beds, had a rough ride as I was also more "nestled" because most sofa beds have higher sides, so while they fought to stay in the middle of their comfortable, totally flat mattresses, I was all snug as a bug and let the up-down, side-to-side lull me to sleep.

Fanatic - I somehow remember having a bed on either the old Volendam or Rotterdam, that had sides on it to prevent you from rolling out of bed. You were smart to take the sofa bed and be so snug. The way the cabin steward tucks in the sheets and blanket on the beds, I don't think I would roll out very easily, but I know it has happened. The minute I get into the bed I pull all the sheets out as I hate being in a cocoon, however, on a rough night I would be glad to be in one.

Maxtone-Graham, in his The Only Way to Cross, made mention of what he calls "an old steward's trick" (meaning the trick was old, not the steward) of taking extra blankets and tucking them under the edges of the bed, thus creating a cradle for those rocky nights. That sounds cozy, too!

My first question is, have you ever cruised before? If not, do you realize how small the cabins are? I really couldn't imagine sharing a cabin with another couple. Quarters are tight, bathroom facilities are extremely small and the thought about getting ready for dinner with four people in the cabin would just blows my mind! Save your money for another year and get separate cabins. You'll have a much better cruise experience and still be friends!
