As I looked out my window today, I could see out in the distant Hudson River what could only be Carnival's newest "fun ship" -- the Victory. I will be sailing the second of her two night cruises to nowhere on the 20th -- Since I have never cruised less than 3 days, and never where there has been no stops -- anyone know what I can expect? Also, I had read on Carnival's web site that the 2 night cruises to nowhere on the Victory in 2001 will include open bar -- I have not read the same about this current crop of cruises...anyone know if this will apply? I know they are doing pre-paid gratuities -- but will they really generate bar charges for 3000 people for just one and 1/2 days? This will be my first trip on the Destiny Class ships and I cannot wait!

We were on a two day cruise to nowhere last year on Carnival's Fascination and it was quite an experience (...unfortunately a bad experience). Hopefully it will be different for you, but you might run into some of the same issues that are particular to a cruise to nowhere with an open bar. If you are lucky maybe they won't have open bar. Here's our voyage report from May of last year...

----------------------------

Voyage Report: Carnival Cruise Lines MS Fascination returned to service this past weekend following two weeks of renovations with what was advertised as an overnight "Cruise to Nowhere". Unfortunately, a combination of Carnival miscues turned the voyage into a "Cruise to Hell" for many of the 2000+ passengers on board.

The cruise fare included unlimited free drinks and many of the passengers on board seemed determined to take full advantage of the situation by making the bars their first stop after boarding the ship. Unfortunately, at the time only two of the Fascination's bars were open and the staff was quickly overwhelmed by angry mobs of thirsty passengers.

The open bar environment contributed to one of the most unorganized and unruly lifeboat drills we've ever seen. Many passengers failed to don their life jackets and continued drinking throughout the drill. Carnival officers and staff seemed ill prepared to deal with the situation and the drill ended without the customary roll call for each lifeboat and some passengers never having been directed to their lifeboat station.

Things got worse at dinner when the ocean started getting rough and many of the passengers who had been assigned dinner at the early seating crashed the late (second) seating. The dining room staff made no attempt to control the flow of extra passengers and as a result, over one hundred late seating passengers were forced to eat at a "late, late seating" beginning at 10:15 PM.

By the time Carnival decided to offer a third sitting, it was too late for the stranded passengers to make it to the early entertainment and by the time they left the third sitting the entertainment was over. Service at the late, late seating was rushed as the dining room staff urged passengers to order quickly and became annoyed when the pace of dinner slowed to civilized levels.

From the bars to the restaurants to the front desk, Carnival staff consistently refused to take any responsibility for the situation and responded by blaming the passengers for all of the problems. If this comedy of errors had not involved the safety, comfort and money of the passengers it might have been amusing. Unfortunately for all those on board - it did, and was not.

--------------------------

If you do have open bar, make sure you get to dinner early...

BenBen, if she's anything like the Triumph, you will enjoy. I'm going to see for myself on the 29th because my mom/travel agent has a pass, so I can get on as a prospective client.

you can see the ship from a live cam, go to http://earthcam.com/usa/newyork/intrepid/
This cam moves so you may have to wait for the ship to come into view. The cam is aboard the aircraft carrier Itreptid. There is one more very cool cam across the harbor that you can zoom in on the ship. I'll go ad get that address and post it for you all. Be back soon. I use this cam alot to watch ships in New York.
Richard

Here is the other address http://www.nj.com/nycskyline/zoom.ssf
To move the cam place the pointer on the left of the picture and click move down the harbor. Also change the zoom level the click in the middle of the picture to zoom in. I hope this is understandable. If not there is a help click. Enjoy.
