Hi. I am new to the post. I have a feeling that Premier is going down. I wonder who is paying for the Overhaul that BRB II is going to have??

Anyways more on me:

I love Royal history like King and Queens.
My fav: King Louis XVI King Henry VIII and Elizabeth I. I LOVE Ocean liners and Cruise ships. My fav. cruise line (2) are NCL AND CCL.

Joe, what the heck happened? People have been predicting this for weeks, but what is the reason? Safety violations, health violations or financial reasons?

I always think about the poor crews, who are left to their own devices. Many of them come from poor countries, and I know finding another job will be difficult (maybe not, with all the new ships about). Nierenberg will recover.

I just tried entering their web site, and it's is frozen. The first page comes up, but that's about it.

The reason for Premier's demise is MONEY. They are hideously in debt, and the company that held the mortgage on their ships heard that other creditors were going to try and go after Premier. The mortgage holders didn't want to lose their money, so they decided to seize the ships to maximize their odds of recovering their losses.

5 years ago in 2 days.

She is one line that I miss. Classic liners are for me. The service and food were very good considering what the cruise fares were, in fact miles ahead of Cunard under Conover.

I was on the Sea Breeze in July 1999 and the Rembrandt in August of 2000 and missed getting kicked off the ship by 11 days.

<sigh> I served aboard Oceanic (BRB I) and was aboard her when we were ordered to put back to Nassau to off-load everyone. I miss those classic ships that actually felt like ships...

From what I heard on board for several weeks prior to the bankruptcy/vessel seziure this is absolutely true and the reason Premier was having money troubles was fourfold:

1.) A top executive (VP) managed to ebezzle an ENORMOUS amount of money (on the order of 100 million+ ) and fled to a non-extradition country
2.) At the same time Premier was negotiating for the purchase of SS Edinburgh Castle which was slated to (and later did) become the BRB II which tied up even more of the companys capital.
3.) A string of bad press and unfortunate accidents plagued the company that same year with the sinking of a tug by BRB III (Island Breeze), massive technical problems with the BRB II's inaugural, two passenger jumps from the BRB I's fantail in July & August, and an anchor dragged across the main power cable for Newport News Rhode Island, all of which contributed to mass cruise cancellations and practically empty sailings.
4.) And of course the loss of Ocean Breeze, a high revenue generator on a parallel Nassau - Port Canaveral Run

With so much revenue lost and decreasing passenger counts premier could barely maintain the only ship that was still earning revenue BRB I (Oceanic) ...

It's a shame what one man's greed can do.

There really does not seem to be much of a market for 'classic' ships in American waters these days.

Many of the worlds classic ships that have not visited Alang, operate from the UK or in the Med.

I know that many Brits still have a strong sense of nautical history, hence the popularity of P&O. Cunard, Saga, and Fred Olsen etc.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure Premier wasn't broadcasting that one, the only reason I found out was a rather optimistic meeting with premier head office officials where it was said that the embezzlement rumors were true but that the company would be fine. This was circulated in response to massive fleetwide supply problems from uniforms to hull paint to TP. This memo was roughly five months prior to the ships being seized.

I have a Big Red Boat brochure showing a touched-up photo of ROTTERDAM/REMBRANDT with a red hull. She would have looked awful!

Onno, Yes, that's right, only without the blue stripe. Oh I guess we would have gotten used to her with a red hull, just like OCEANIC, ROYALE and EUGENIO C had, but it just seemed cheap and insulting to such a classic ship!

At least you were never in the position of having to justify painting the ships red to passengers. I always felt like I needed a shower afterward.
