looking for some insight form a very recent Norway cruiser. For months I read good to excellent reports about the Norway. Now all I read are discouraging reports. It seems that the same people are bombarding all cruise ship boards about the terrible conditions on the Norway. Looking for an update from a person that just got off the ship.

Heres' a short review by one of our readers who was onboard in July....

--------------------------------
Norwegian Cruise Line
SS Norway

Your Rating: 4 Stars
Reviewed by: Phillip Johnson
# previous cruises: 1
Date of Trip: July 8, 2000
Itinerary: Caribbean - Eastern

The cruise was great. The food is the very best I have ever tasted and the service is unbeatable, the ship is very clean and very well maintained. If there was any negative things about it, it would have been the fact that we had to tender in to every port of call due to the ships large draft.

The polls and casinos are very clean and the the lounges are very comfortable, my personal favorite is the North Cape Lounge.there was a large open promenade that was easy to navigate and made it easy to get from point A to point B form anywhere on board.

The food was six star gourmet meals and to service unbeatable. The crew is willing to help you with anything and will serve you at any time. If you want something not on the menu, u can request it and get it!

The cabins were very comfortable and even though my cabin was in a very busy and noisy area, it was pretty much sound proof and quite inside. The showers were spacious and had plenty of heat and pressure! The cabin had quite a bit of space and keep in mind it was a lower cost cabin too.

They had broadway shows every night and two comedians. It was non stops laughs with comedian David Naster and I couldn't have had a better time. The shows were great.

We stopped at St Martin, St Thomas, St John and a private island. We were somewhat cramped for time but had a great time anyway. I would highly recommend it for anyone, and to child care program was also very good, kept to kids out of parents hair and kept them entertained and busy with games, scavenger hunts and so on.

Most of the passengers were very friendly and it was a pleasure to meet them. The six others we ate dinner with each night I would definately invite over for dinner again, matter of fact they will be visiting us soon.

Anybody have a more recent report?

Kappy,

I have seen lots of bad reviews recently on another board. It seems like most of them were not about the food or entertainment, but the condition of the ship.

It always stuns me how two passengers can have a totally different view of a ship, cruise line and even the same cruise! Just look at the two Travelpage reviews on Fred Olsen's 'Black Watch' (the recent one is mine).

I toured the Norway two years ago and she was in great shap, but of course things could have changed. However, only last year the SS Norway was voted favourite ship in the Travelpage poll. Kappy, If you want an immaculate ship, don't pick a 30-year-old ship. If you are looking for a real 'ship' with tons of history and character, but don't mind a few rust spots (even the QE2 has these) go for the Norway!

As for food, service and entertainment, these areas are particularly subjective. One mans meat is another mans poison!

Kappy,
Would highly recommend. Got off the first week in July and had a fantastic time. Couldn't believe all of the bad reviews that were coming in (I guess it was about 50/50 - either you like it or you don't - doesn't seem to be a whole lot of middle ground with the Norway). Could go into a lot of detail, but the first response pretty much said it all.

Kappy,

Travelled with the Norway in July. She is an old lady but well maintained.

Travelled on the QE2 in 98, a fantastic ship, but so is the Norway.

Of course some of her inside cabins are extremely small but on the other the price is low.

Regards
Gripsholm

We were on The Norway in July, and we boarded with every intention of loving the ship and appreciating her history. Although we had a good cruise, we found The Norway to be a little drab. I wasn't looking for glitz, but I was hoping for elegance. I think NCL cuts corners on this ship, which is unfortunate. The service was great, our cabin was roomy, so no complaints there.
Some of the entertainment was excellent, but some nights there was very little entertainment to take advantage of (part of the corner-cutting).

I would go on The Norway again, but with different expectations. Maybe I expected too much.

Our biggest inconvenience was finding a shady place to sit outdoors. Other than the pool area, there are no covered sitting areas. We ended up sitting to read on top of the life jacket bin on the walking deck (no chairs).

Sorry to be negative. If you're going on The Norway, realize beforehand that she has a few flaws, go with an open mind and have a great cruise!
