Here are some shots of a model of the new ship being built for the United States Lines.

as you can see she is not the most beautiful ship. Very boxy- not at all elegant.

To tell you the truth, I just hate to see such an opportunity lost. This will be the first cruise ship built in the US in over 40 years- and in a growing field of beautiful ships I think she will be a joke. I don't see anything innovative about the design- in fact they have taken everything disappointing about recent cruise ship design and made it worse. you can see ECONOMY written all over her. First, they have crammed as many cabin onto the hull as possible by pushing every deck as far forward and aft as the hull will allow- giving her the boxy shape. Then they give her a totally unimaginative upper deck with a squat looking funnel. Someone should have vetoed this design right from the start

No bow! No stern! No class!

And will those three-plus (on each side, I assume) itty bitty lifeboats hold averyone. Or if they are tenders, prepared for long waits!

I posted earlier but it didn't come up.

Anyhoo, this ship is quite ugly, especially the logo, the tiny stubby bow, and the funnel and the overall shape. However, it certainly has some redeeming qualities. The pool area looks very nice. The semi-terraced stern looks relatively nice, comparitavely speaking. And I would love to take a walk on that open promenade! I think it looks really cool. Remember, you can't see how ugly ur ship is if you are on it!

Paddy.

P.S. The lack of lifeboats doesn't look very comforting or pretty!

When I thought I've seen enough ugly ships another one appears... she looks like a floating matchbox. If this ship marks the return of the US shipyards to passenger ship building, then they shouldn't have returned at all.
The only thing that seems nice is the upper deck, with lots of free space.
Perphaps her interior design is superior to the exterior design, and if the service is good then people will come because the cruise market in Hawaii is growing strong and will become a strong alternative to the Caribbean.

Ok all jokes aside what will the ship really look like ? The superstructure under the bridge looks like the stern part of a ship and her bow looks short and blunt.

The only thing that could make this ship more pathetic is giving her a proud name like SS UNITED STATES or SS AMERICA !

wow....she's a stubby alright !....but when you think about the itinerary that she will be cruising week after week, year after year...why not just keep to the basics and construct her like one of the hotels on honolulu row......she ain't goin far....jeff.

I can see the profit motive at work here. Luckily they have Hawaii to sell. American Classic Voyages, I think, has done some really innovative things, I'm looking forward to taking a coastal cruise sometime. In this case, I'll certainly agree they could have done (much) better. I just hope that if I ever go back to Hawaii, they still have the Patriot in the fleet!

The frightening thing is that they probably could call one of these the SS America. But I don't think they would dare call one of them the SS United States, mostly as she still exists. That's tantamount to blasphemy! And yes, the relative lack of lifeboats given the apparent size of the vessel is most disconcerting. Titanic revisited, anyone?
I don't think that the livery is that objectionable, though. If they could come up with a nicer ship design, they'd have a winner.

eeeeeeewwwwww!!

I envisioned something totally different - if Disney can build beautiful neoclassical ships, why can't the US Lines? Seeing this ship gives me the urge to go out and buy a pair of shoes. Why not build something reminiscent of the lovely INDEPENDENCE and CONSTITUTION? Or one of the wonderful Matson liners? The US merchant marine has a wonderful legacy to draw on in regard to cruise liners, but they are totally ignoring it.

I know nothing about the dynamics of ship design, but this ugly-assed ship doesn't look seaworthy at all!! The waters surrounding Hawaii can get rough (I KNOW this, having sailed in them several times in the US Navy), and this ship does NOT look like she'll give a good ride.

Being an American, with a design background, a love of ships (and most forms of transportation), and a travel agent, I can say only one thing:

How humiliating.

At least they got rid of the big colorful "diaper" that used to be infront of the funnel.
