Hi Gizmo - regarding that other forum, I don't think it nearly as good as Travel Page. When did you say your next cruise was and where are and what ship are you going on?

Something I was wondering - how do HAL Alumni feel about the new medals and the system they are now using?

Sympatico,

My guess was correct!
Next cruise is not until Feb 25, 10 days on the Volendam, Bonaire, Margarita, St. Lucia, St. Kitts, St. Thomas. This is the group cruise where I found the great prices. I think there are about 86 people going so far. Most are from the US but there are 2 from the UK and 1 or 2 from Canada.
This site is much more interesting. I do pick up some info from that other site every now and then.
I have only sailed HAL twice but love this line and have no intention of changing. I did not care for the Alumni changes. I wonder why they did this.

Probably easier to figure. Before, it was 3 trips, 5 trips, 10 trips, then x miles, x-more miles. My mother got a 40,000 sea miles medal for who knows how many trips, for how many days, and for how many miles.

Of course, I haven't seen it in action yet. I was sort of looking forward to getting something for this tenth cruise.

tomc - the 40,000, silver medal, was given for 115 days of sailing. The gold for, I believe 285. These were such obscure #'s, tht I guess they decided to change it to
25 days - red pin
50 days - blue pin
100 days copper pin and medallion
300 days - silver pin and medallion
500 days - gold pin and medallion
700 days - platinum pin and medallion

They used to give a certificate for 10
cruises but they have eliminated that also. Just count up the number of days you sailed and you can figure out what you are going to get. Even if you did 10x7day cruises you would at least get the blue pin! Actually the pins are very nice. My daughter got a red one last cruise, and I liked it better than my silver.
Good luck - let us know which one you get.

Hi Sympatico...we DO NOT like the new award system. As someone wrote on another posting we are not in a hotel but at sea...so they should consider sea miles and not days!!! The old saying goes "if it ain't broke don't fix it" (or something like that.
I think maybe they might have started the new system to reward and attract new cruisers to have something to look forward to. In fact, I know of a 6-yr. old who will be receiving his red pin in November...now that's young!!
I think most of us will still be wearing our old medals for a long time as we show HAL we don't care for the new awards.

How right you are LizB. I got absolutely nowhere when I phoned the Alumni Dept. The gal just couldn't understand why I didn't like the new medals. You keep wearing yours and I will keep wearing mine and see what they have to say. Maybe we should wear all of them!!!!!!!!!

hmmm... 7 @ 7 days to Alaska, 2 @ 7 to New England, 1 @ 10 to New England. That's 73 days = a blue pin and 23 days in the bank.

Maybe I can bring my mother's 40,000 medal with me, stuffed in my pocket with the ribbon just peeking out a tiny little bit and see if the staff is more attentive to my needs.

Sympatico: My husband and I were not the least bit pleased when the captain congratulated us and presented us with a bronze medal, thereby "DEMOTING" us from silver...especially since we were only 2 cruises short of gold under the old system. I cannot not fathom what Alumni Dept. was thinking...this is how you reward and thank your most loyal passengers? By taking away medals we have previously had presented to us?
(and had earned according to their guidelines).

I have tried to understand what the advantage was to HAL by changing the system, and I cannot find an answer. There was certainly no advantage to the passengers! It wasn't broke...why did they have to fix it?

Sorry....I meant to say copper medal in my previous post. Frankly, it is so tinny looking, who know what color it is! Also, I much prefered the other ribbons with the blue stripes instead of the new blue. Okay, I've vented and will move on!

NEGATIVE on the new award system
Received my 40,000 on our first Hawaii Cruise and have since done it again, together with several Caribbean/Mexican trips plus two Trans-Atlantics on Rotterdam V1 - what did I receive - the scruffy little 100 pin & medal thing!
For sure I'll keep wearing my 40,000 medal and will also continue to bug HAL about its bad decision.
