Those of you interested in the progress of Princess's Golden Princess (scheduled to enter service in May of 2001) might want to check out http://golden.princess.com/ .

Here are some progress photo's from the site.

The front section is lowered into place

The ship's bow becomes easily recognizable.

Golden Princess' bridge under construction.

Skywalker's Nightclub (...and world's first cruise ship spoiler) is lowered into place above the aft section.

Hi Joe:

Great pictures, but I think it's actually the world's SECOND cruise ship spoiler.

Great pics!

There is a picture of the 'Golden Princess' on the front of the new Princess Mediterranean Cruises 2001, brouchure. She is fully complete and in cruising in Venice! Funny, but the picture looks identical to a picture of the 'Grand Princess' in last years Brouchure! What a coincidence!

On page 4 the Golden Princess is shown in Monte Carlo. The Brouchue says that she is the "newest ship to join the fleet". This is rather missleading!

UK ship spotters: She due to call at Southampton on May 16, 2001.

...I hope that they fit that 'spoiler' on well? Imagine disco dancing while it fell off into the sea at 20 knots!

Now that would 'exceed all your expectations'.

Malcolm

It is not a spoiler but is in fact a downforce wing similar to a F1 racing car. These P&O ships go so fast they have to stop them taking off!!!

Hi Terry:

I don't know if this is another example of the difference between British and American English, but in the U.S the term "spoiler" means the downforce wing on the back of a racing car.

Is it me, or does the funnel appear to be different from the Grand Princess? The Grand's funnel has horizontal lines through which one can see the internal pipes and mechanics. The Golden's funnel (still under construction in the shot above) appears to not have these horizontal slats- but instead a mesh looking material. Am I mistaken.

Frankly, I have not liked the recent funnel designs on the princess ships. It makes the 'sea witch' logo difficult to see from a distance. I hope they move away from this design on their upcoming ships... and I think they will as the new ships will have gas turbine engines located inside the funnel.

I don't know if this is the difference between Calfornia & Pennsylvania English, but I always referred to the spoiler as the aerodynamic item (can't think of any other description than spoiler) under the front bumper. The rear downforce item was always called a wing, whale tail, etc. Maybe I'm confusing "street" lingo with racing lingo.

Regardless, looks like a pretty cool nightclub on the Golden Princess.

Thanks for the photos, Joe.

Well....I think this calls for an objective opinion so I went to the place I always go when in doubt - www.dictionary.com . Here's how they defined "spoiler":

spoil·er (spoilr)
n.

One who seizes spoils or booty.
Something that causes spoilage.

A long, narrow hinged plate on the upper surface of an airplane wing that reduces lift and increases drag when raised.

An air deflector mounted usually at the rear of an automobile to reduce lift at high speeds.

A candidate for office whose chances of winning are slight but who may get enough votes to prevent one of the leading candidates from winning.

Thanks Joe.

I stand corrected. I know I'm getting way off the topic now, but does anyone know what that aerodynamic thing is under the front bumper that always scrapes the parking block? If it's not spoiler, I'd love to know.

Never mind...I just looked it up on the net and found that the front is a type of spoiler called an air dam.

___________________________________________
"Spoilers are used primarily on sedan-type race cars. They act like barriers to air flow, in order to build up higher air pressure in front of the spoiler. This is useful because a sedan car tends to become "Light" in the rear end as the low pressure area above the trunk lifts the rear end of the car.

Front air dams are also a form of spoiler, only their purpose is to restrict the air flow from going under the car."
