Hi everybody,

I just returned from the MS Noordam.

I've sailed the western mediteranean for the last 10 days.

I will write a full review, but you know my reviews always take a while.

The thing that i can tell you right now about the cruise is that i have a NEW favorite ship.

Talk to you later.

Bernard, Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

Bernard:

Glad to hear you enjoyed your trip. I've never been on Noordam, but I loved her sister Nieuw Amsterdam. When she finishes her metamorphosis into Patriot, I might have to give her another run.

Noordam is using Lisboa as the departure port on several cruises this year, so I must deduct that you left the ship in Lisboa. So I have to ask you: did you visit our capital city? Did you like it?
I would like hear your opinion about Lisboa (that is if you toured the city).
Also I hope you had a great time during the cruise.

Paulomestre....

I disembarked the ship in Lisbon yesterday.

I have to be honest with you.

I don't like Lisbon.

It was the second time this year that i was disembarking a HAL-ship in Lisbon and both of the times my eyes burnt because of the unhealthy air in Port. I've written my opinion about lisbon in my Rotterdam review, also posted on this site.

Sad to hear that but I'm the first one to recognize that Lisbon as a small air pollution problem. When the wind doesn't blow you can see perfectly the orange cloud floating over the city iluminated by the sunset. But considering other European capitals it's not so bad (Athens, Paris, Rome, etc).
It's sad to know that such a small thing deprived you from apreciating our capital city. But hating is easy, liking is more dificult.

Paulo Mestre

Noordam is one of our favorite ships, too. We also like Lisbon a lot; kind of a European version of San Francisco (and great food).

By the way, when did they change Noordam's registration? When we were on her, it wasn't Rotterdam.

I'm in agreement, Noordam is one of the best ships sailing the world's oceans. A great size and very traditional as well. They don't come much better today.

Thanks for all the wonderful photos Paulo. I had originally planned on visiting Lisboa pre-cruise next month but changed my plans when my TA came up with anbelievable bargain on a cruise out of Genoa.

I very much want to visit Portugal as my mother's grandparents came to the U.S. from the Azores, so I am a Portuguese American. Maybe next year!!

We'll be sailing on the Noordam in January. I'm interested in the staterooms. Which category were you in and what was the room like. Thanks in advance for the info.

Paulo:

I must rush to defend Lisbon, having spent a terrific week there this Spring. The air, like that in many European cities, is a bit of an issue for Americans at least but I expect that will lessen as pollution bans are tightened.

The Sheraton Towers was great with a gorgeous view of the King Edward park, the metro system is easy to negotiate, the food was incredibly good and dirt cheap by US standards (say "hi" to Zee at the Cafe Alcantara - a fantastic, over-the-top dining experience which would be at home in NYC and the most amazing mensroom, bar none) as well as some of the nicest people one could meet.

Lisbon is an underappreciated gem. Bring eyewash/artificial tears, to be sure, but don't miss it.

Bostom: I'm glad to know that you've spend a nice time in Lisbon. Appreciative comments are always good, but bad comments/reviews are very helpfull in pointing out what is wrong and needs to be changed.
