While boarding our last Carnival cruise I had to empty my pockets to pass through the xray machine. Upon exposing the contents and placing in a tray the official took my pocket knife, examined it and told me I could pick it up after the cruise. This was just an ordinary pocket knife I carry with me wherever I wear clothes. I had never been questioned about this knife before. I felt like a crminal in frount of the crowd. What was ironic that evening we sat down to dinner and our silverware place sitting contained a knife with twice the blade.

Sorry about the spelling error on the topic! Joe can we edit the topic.

Why do you need to carry a knife?

Well that's interesting because on my last cruise - NCL - they were letting what seemed like just about everything on. The x-ray technicians appeared to be too busy talking to people next to them to have any idea what was in the bags going though the machine.

At least twice, I saw people go through the metal detector, set it off, and keep going. They stopped the first guy, but the second time, an older man carrying a shoulder bag, set the alarm off and kept walking. Guards looked and yelled for him to stop. He was either unable to understand or couldn't hear, cause he kept going and nobody bothered to stop him.

In your case, cncservo, I guess I'd rather have them be overly cautious, then barely cautious at all.

Last July I was stopped on R.C. because I was carrying a pocket knife. Told the same thing. The time before I had one of the "Buck tools" in my pocket. No problem. To those of you who don't know what a "Buck tool" is. It is a combination plier, pocket knife, screw driver, etc.
To the other post why carry a knife? Well, I am and old 61 year farm boy and I have always carried a pocket knife. I do use it to cut the tie wraps on my luggage. I put them on so as I know if any body messed with my luggage. (Tip for all of you worried about luggage) Laws have changed quite a bit lately. I suppose security considers pocket knifes a weapon. Personnaly I don't consider a 3 1/2 inch pocket knife a threat. But next time I'll just leave my pocket knife at home and play by their rules.

My husband has a Swiss Army knife which he always carriedl. It has a screwdriver, corkscrew, nail scissors etc. the handiest thing to carry around. He has even been known to make repairs, a loose screw on a drawer!!! What about the person who has a pair of nail scissors in their washing bag or the person who does needlepoint and has larger scissors. I think it is a little silly. Perhaps next we wont be allowed knifes to eat our meals.

My husband always carried his Swiss Army knife with him and never had any problem. He had to put it in the basket, along with all his change (finally smartened up after years of travelling and kept it all in one pocket so he didn't have to go rummaging around for it) and he never had a problem. I guess sit just depends who is doing the screening. Some take their job seriously and others don't.

The problem is that when some young (and not so young) folk are exposed to the heady mixture of alcohol and lould music they sometimes fight and even stab each other! Now I am well aware that this does not apply to everbody. Unfortunately, it does happen pretty regularly in the worlds big cities. It is a fact of modern life.

I suppose carnival with it's reputation for 'Fun' and a younger crowd are just being careful?

I used to carry a VERY small penknife with me. It fit on my keychain. It's amazing how often it came in handy for cutting packaging etc.

I say used to because I work in a job that requires me to go to court. You guessed it, about two months ago they increased security. Not even the smallest blades are exempt.

James
