My friends mother, his sister and her boyfriend were on a cruise in the summer and during it the boyfriend got quite abusive. I don't think they reported it, but if they did report it, what would happen, and what would the cruise line do if they found out about it during the cruise. Where do they put scum like that while still on the ship?
And what about people who get too drunk and security have to get involved? What happens to them. Stena Line used to operate Party Cruises to Nowhere on their HSS Fast Ferry (see Malcolm's postings), with themes like ABBA night etc. on a Saturday night leaving Belfast at 9 pm and returning at 2am. These highly popular cruises were stopped after a big fight broke out onboard. Its disgusting how the irresponsible few ruin things for everyone.

TLC had something about that, IIRC, the other day. I think they mentioned that there is a "cell" or something for people who experience a need to be locked up.

Yes...the cruise ships actually have a "Brig". The Brig is usually in a crew area, and can be locked from the outside. It's usually a small cabin with the basics, a bed and toilet, but nothing fancy. I remember seeing the brig on the Song of America high up on the top decks, near the Bridge. On the Zaandam, I came across the Brig while I was snooping around below decks forward.

On board most of the cruise ships there is a brig. It's a room with only a bed and a toilet, with padded walls and without any loose object (even without the air conditioing grating). The toilet may also be just outside the brig, by the guard station. With some surprise I've discovered they removed the brig from the Carnival Spirit class ships.

On any ship, the Captain has clearly defined legal powers and is allowed to restrain or even lock up a passenger or crew member who he/she believes is endangering the ship or passengers and crew. Therefore it would be quite within the limits of the law (though not very good PR!) for a Captain to lock up a rowdy passenger.
