Doues anybody know something about the former soviet cruise ships? A lot of them donīt exist, they were wracked. But where are ...
- "Taras Shevchenko"
- "Shota Rustaveli"
- "Mikhail Sholokhov" (Baltic ferry?????)
- "Olvia" etc.

I know that "Francesca" (ex "Konstantin Simonov) has been sold to Mano Maritime, Israel and "Carina" is offered by Primexpress as the "Primexpress Island".

Where are the mentioned ships? Who offers cruises?

Where is the "Van Gogh"? Is there a web-site with cruises?

Has one of the "Gruziya"-class ships a blue hull? In a brochure of SUNBAY Cruises (new small cruise ship "Sun Bay" from 2001) I found a picture of one of these ships in a Norwegian fjord. Think it is a "real" pic.

Hope anybody can gibe me answers.

To Karsten:
Iīm a specialist for former Soviet ships and Iīm happy to help you further with the details:
TARAS SHEVCHENKO (Cable Navigation Ltd. / BLASCO), SHOTA RUSTAVELi (Redwood Shipping Co. / BLASCO) and FEDOR SHALJAPIN (Odessa Sun Ltd. / BLASCO) are currently laid up in Ilychevsk / Ukraine. Negotiations are currently going on about how to use these ships in future. BLASCOīs new manager Sergey Melaschenko announced that he wants an only passenger-shipping company and is therefore selling all other activities of BLASCO. the Ukrainian ministry announced all help by investing new money into the now called UkrPasFlot (Ukrainian Passenger Fleet).
Many of the BLASCO ships were transferd to subsidiaries to avoid from any unpleasant arrest due to claims of other companies.
The MIKHAIL SHOLOKOV (owned by Far Eastern Shipping Company) has replaced her sistership RUSS on the so called ScanSov Line between Riga-Stockholm and St. Petersburg. The RUSS has instead been chartered to Maon Maritime Ltd. to replace the DIMITRIY SHOSTAKOVICH between Haifa and Odessa. The D.S. is now operating as the PALOMA under the management of PSM Shipmanagement / SCL Overseas Ltd. like her sistership PALMIRA (ex LEV TOLSTOY). She is charterd by Hansa Touristik.
The FRANCESCA has been sold to Mano Maritime Ltd. and will cruises the Mefiterranean Sea (see www.mano.co.il)
The OLVIA has beeb transfered to BLASCO subsidiary K&O Shipping Company and operates mainly under charter to Peace Boat Cruises or Japanese operators on a worldwide schedule.
The AZERBAYDZHAN (controlled by BLASCO subsidiary Norsong Shipping Co.) is under bare-boat charter to Commodore Cruises in the Caribbean. Her new name is ENCHANTED CAPRI.
The KAZAKHSTAN (controlled by Black Sea Shipping Co. itself) is under bare-boat charter to New SeaEscape Cruises to perform casino-cruises (see www.seaescape.com). Her new name is ISLAND ADVENTURE.
The BELORUSSIYA, the nicest of the 5 sisters, is under charter to Delphin Seereisen as the DELPHIN (managed through MTC Marine Trade Consulting, owned by BLASCO subsidiary Dolphin Maritime Ltd.).
The GRUZIYA, after the DELPHIN the 2nd nicest of the 5 sisters, is under charter to Nouvelles Frontičres for French passengers (during winter in the Caribbean, during summer in the Mediterranean). She is owned by BLASCO subsidiary Eltek Shipping Co. and renamed VAN GOGH. (see www.nouvellesfrontieres.com)
The ODESSA (the pride of the Ukrainian fleet) is still in Naples. I was visiting her this September and, apart from the outside hull, the ship remains in very good condition inside. The crew has been motivated lately to do some more maintenance work (also outside) due to quite interesting news announced during a court-descision. The ship has been successfuly transfered to a subsidiary and negotiations about a new charter-contract with Transocean Tours, as a fleet-mate of the ASTOR, are going on quite positively. But I canīt tell you more about it right now, sorry but itīs still too confidential.
If you have further questions about another ex Soviet ship, just donīt hesitate asking me.

Another surviving Soviet cruise ship is the SILVER STAR, ex BASHKIRIYA also owned by the Mano Cruises of Israel.
She's the only survivor (I think) of the once numerous MIKHAIL KALININ class, that compreended 19 ships.

The MIKHAIL KALININ, sistership of the Bashkiriya

The SILVER STAR, you can see from the picture above that she changed a bit from the original look (image borrowed from www.mano.co.il ).

Patrick,
My first ship was the 'Ivernia" then only 6 years old and running to Canada and New York in winter,I see her sister
'Saxonia' has now been scrapped, what chance would an old ship like the "IVY" have to go back to sea. ? Not much of a chance I fear, she is about 46 years old. I have a soft spot for her so if you should hear any news on her demise, please let me know, Thanks. Baker..

FEDOR SHALJAPIN, ex FRANCONIA (1963), IVERNIA (1954).

IVERNIA, renamed FRANCONIA after the 1962/1963 refit for cruising. She looks nice with the white hull. (image from www.ships.cwc.net )

It could be possible for a return to sea of the IVERNIA/FRANCONIA/FEDOR SHALJAPIN, after all ALBATROS (ex Sylvania) and FAIR PRINCESS (ex CARINTHIA) are still in use and provide nice cruising experiences.
It only needs a manager with guts, will and money to put her back to cruising order.

A MESSAGE FOR PATRICK:

Hello Patrick

I hope you can help me, do you know anything about a Russian Cargo Vessel called the "Vetlugals" it called in at Grangemouth, Scotland around 1967/68.

It was my first encounter with ships of any size, to see it just squeeze through the dock gates was fascinating, and the guards at the top of the gang plank with their guns.

Cheers
Mary

Paulo, thanks for the pictures !!!
From MIKHAIL KALININ -series remain:
KHABAROVSK
EXCELSIOR MERCURY (ex MARIYA ULYANOVA)
NIKOLAYEVSK
BAYKAL
SILVER STAR.
Last one is owned by Silver Star Shipping Company which is a subsidiary of BLASCO again (remember that Ukrainians have an excellent talent to hide the "real" ownership in a "knitting-pattern" if I can say it like that. If anybody has claims towards someone, they can deny to be responsible because the registry is a different one but in case of a global publicity and popularity to outside, all is one company !)
The SILVER STAR is only chartered to Mano Maritime.

Baker, I keep you updated about the FEDOR SHALJAPIN. Since UkrPasFlot (BLASCO) is doing much better already during the last months, a come-back of her could be possible (remember she was dedicated to be scrapped but saved anyway, so it means rather good news for BLASCO-situation).

Scottyglass: Iīm sorry but about cargo-ships I canīt help you too much, even if they are Russian or German. There are just too many around to keep the overview about them.

to Karsten: Are you sure that the blue hull is not a reflection of the fjord-water ? I have seen similar pictures already, you think the ship is blue but it isnīt.
Iīm sure that none of the BELORUSSIYA class ships had a blue hull. Only the GRUZIYA had a partly-blue hull "ā la Celebrity" when sailing as the ODESSSA SKY.

Hi Patrick

Thank you for your reply regarding Vetlugals, for a Cargo Vessel of what I can remember it looked quite good, it had a pale green hull.

Do you know where the Saxonia was actually scrapped, and when??

Cheers
M.

From www.maritimematters.com (page dedicated to SAXONIA/FRANCONIA/LEONID SOBINOV):

.. She was renamed LEONID SOBINOV (after a famous Russian actor) and chartered to British-based CTC Lines. Following a refit by by Swan Hunter at South Shields, her first voyage as LEONID SOBINOV from Southampton to Sydney commenced on February 25, 1974. She then cruised Australian Waters and made occasional UK to Australia voyages. This segment of her career ended when Australia banned Russian ships from their ports in December 1979 after Soviet troops invaded Afganistan. She and her sister FEDOR SHALYAPIN were next rumored to have sailed to Vladivostock. Later used for trooping between Cuba and Angola. In 1989, LEONID SOBINOV was given a refit and mechanical overhaul which saw much of her original furnishing and paneling replaced. In 1990, with the dissolution of the Soviet Union, she was registered at Malta, spending her final active years on low-budget Mediterranean service.

In 1995, she was laid up at Iliychevsk, Ukraine in need of mechanical repairs and cosmetic upgrading. Shortly afterwards, she was joined by the FEDOR SHALYAPIN. Despite rumors that SOBINOV had been scrapped in Calcutta in 1997, both sisters remained idle until December 1998, when LEONID finally began raising steam. She left her berth in late January 1999, and following a brief stop at nearby Odessa, passed through the Suez Canal on 10 February bound for Alang, India for scrapping. She arrived at the anchorage on 1 April, 1999.

Thanks to you all for your info on the "IVY". I would love to see her on the move again, one can but hope, at least my old "Oriana" appears to be safe for a while.

Great photo of the "IVY" in white Paulo, she was also painted in Cunard Cruising Green same as the "Caronia" or the Green Goddess as we all called her. Cheers B

To Patrick:

I think it is no reflection. But possible that it is a manipulated photo. The ships is shown in a Norwegian fjord. Possible that the hull was changed in blue in the pic, because the companyīs new ship "Sun Bay" ist also blue. (???). I search it and try to scann it.

Thank you for the answers @all writers :-)

Scanned the photo now... but how can I show it here????? Is it possible? And donīt have your eMail-address, Patrick.

Where are the Croatian "Adriana" and "Dalmacija"? Searching for routes in the www, but without success. Who operates them?

"Rus" cruises in Med, I think. New page www.portic.net with cruise ship calls at Barcelona until June 2001.

Thanks for helping us with the pictures Joe !

Karsten, the DALMACIJA is currently sailing for Russian passengers only. She is cruising to Nothern Europe, Scandinavia and the Mediterranean Sea. She is managed through Croatia Cruise Line but I donīt know the name of the Russian operator.
The ADRINA now belongs to Plein Cape and is managed through Marina Cruise Company with Croatian crew. This ship operates under charter to various operators in France, Germany and Switzerland (not in full- but time-charter only). Last time I saw her itineraries in a French "Kuoni" brochure.
Both are lovely little ships.

Yes, sure, now I know what this picture is about.
You probably know that the SUN BAY will be operated by Columbus Seereisen from Hannover.
Exactly the same company was negotiating in 1999 about chartering the ODESSA SKY for their project. Later this project was withdrawn due to the death of the General manager of Odessa Sun Ltd., who died in a car-accident. The negotiations became difficult and the overtaking of the ODESSA SKY was withdrawn and Columbus got the PALMIRA instead. The picture shows the ODESSA SKY, it was computer-technically overpainted. In reality, the ship never had this blue hull (but it doesnīt look to bad...).
the new SUN BAY will have a blue hull as well. Since the ship is currently being build, they used the other picture instead.

Thank you, Patrick! You are right... the blue hull looks not bad... And blue hulls are "in" at the moment. I like the modern cruise ships which are not painted white, but in other colors, mainly blue (R-ships, HAL-ships, ROC-ships...).

I hope that the nice former soviet ships like the "Taras Shevchenko" etc. will be saved. They are too nice. And "Marco Polo" shows that is possible to have success with such a ship after a major refit. Also hope for a good furure of "Odessa".

Hello Patrick!

I just purchased a card of the Khabarovsk you mentioned in this topic. So she still exists? Can you tell me the year she was built & the names she has had during her career. I tried to look for her at a book titled: "Soviet Merchant Ships", author Ambrose Greenway, but the Khabarovsk wasn't there, at least not under that name.

Regards,
AJL

Alexandr Pushkin = Marco Polo (Orient Lines)

However, I dont think there's much future for the sister ships. When the Polo was converted in '93, there was far less quality 2ndhand tonnage on the market. Today it would make more sense to pick up a 70's or 80's Western ship.

Dear Friends,

I would like to say that the former -Shota Rustavelli- presently ASSEDO( Odessa written backwards) was scheduled to arrive on the 31 December 2001 to Madeira, on a Festive Cruise mostly with Ukranian and Russian passenger to see the fireworks and shore excurssions, however unfortunately this ship did not came, and according to some news, neither she called at Tenerife, her origin port, so,i would like to know if she really departed to make this cruise, and where is she presently, because according to the ASSEDO's company web-site this ship as a full cruise programme for 2002.

best regards,

Ship'sEnthusiast
