My friend can't deciede between the Pacific Princess and the Nordic Empress to go to Bermuda in early May. He's a first time cruiser and is worried that the ride might be rougher than a bigger ship. Does anybody know how the Pacific Princess would handle rough seas? Would there be that much of a difference between the two ships?

My first impression is to go with the Nordic Empress because she's bigger. Pacific Princess is a tiny ship and will ride comfortably, but the rough sea would be felt more I think in a smaller ship.

IMHO the Pacific Princess rides better than any of the "modern" and larger ships currently plying the waters.

We went through Alberto this summer - both to and from Bermuda. Yeah, it was rocky... but she handled a lot better than any Celebrity ship I've sailed (done them all except MIllie)is less harsh conditions.

Look at the various itineraries she does.... the little lady can take a pounding.

No contest, Pacific Princess any day. These people know how to treat you.

Bear in mind there are only two sea days anyway.

I'd say Pacific Princess would ride the best. She was constucted years ago when heavier steel was used that is today. She also is deeper in the water.

Hi..as a matter of interest the max draft on the Pacific Princess is 25.2' and the Nordic Empress is 24.9'
The thickness of the steel in the hull would have no effect at all on how a ship behaves.
It is the design of the hull and the stability characteristics that determine that.

Geno-r, all ships rock and roll in rough seas. My advice is don't worry about it - it may not happen?

If it does, a midships cabin and some sea-sickness pills are you best defence!

Enjoy your trip and do report back o us

Thank you all for your advise. Hey Malcolm, this inquiry was for a friend. If it was me I'd go on the Pacific Princess in a second, especially with the price he got but he decided to go on the Zenith. Probably a good idea for a first timer. Plus he conned me into driving him to the pier. Too bad the Pacific Princess won't be in NY on that day. Now somebody tell me how I can come aboard with him and check out the ship before it sails. Probably not a very good chance I can pull that off though?

It's possible - you will need to write/phone the cruise line and request a boarding pass. It is NEVER possible if you just turn up on the day of departure. Good luck.

I wouldn't say never possible the day of the cruise to just show up at the pier...I did it many times, but then again I snuck on. Malcolm is correct, you would need to contact Celebrity and write them a real nice letter and ask them if they will issue a pass to look around. Celebrity is very strict though, so it won't be easy getting a pass. You may want to contact your TA or a local TA and ask them if they will help you get a pass, or even exscort you aboard the ship. It's easier for TA's to get passes than for the public.

Good luck

I am a travel agent in NY and I am still waiting to get to tour the Nordic Empress or Zenith/Horizon (I have been on both but I know that they were refurbished). I have called Royal Caribbean & Celebrity many times. They told me in NY they do not do tours of the ship except when they have a lunch seminar onboard the ships for agents. In my 3 & 1/2 years in this business they never had such a thing

Carnival & Holland are the only two lines that I know of that allow agents to bring prospective clients to see thier new ships only. This is a very smart move because it has impressed many cruise virgins that I brought along with me!

Barryboat how did you get on these ships while they are in pirt? Your lucky.
