I understand the busness of how ships make profits. I have sailed on over 28 at age 34.
I am said to say both the old Premier and Commodore Lines may they rest in peace, always when asked would provide a single rate, although a little higher but never double the rate. Most cruise lines want a full ship and full cabins, up to four if it is possible. I really don't think every ship gos out to it's max. on every sailing. I realise there are last minute deals for walk ons and airline travel personal, why not cruises for a certain % of singles maybe in off peak seasons? I don't think anyone should or does pay brochure rate. Carnival wants to match you with up to four different people to give a good rate, or most cruises charge up to 150 to 200 % of cabin price. I personally know you spend very little time in your cabin, but still to share with four perfect strangers is a bit much. I have on many of the older ships and cruise lines and they jumped for my reservation. Even the Norway offered its small upper and lower cabins at a good rate. Please don't punish me for being single, I love it and travel alot.
For all those Honeymooners and one night stand ship board romances I leave you my do not disturb sign and the room service menu.
I see you all up and early at breakfast in the dining room, OK, second sitting.

Good points, Alan. I agree. It's one of the reasons I have not gone on another cruise. My first two, I went with friends, and frankly, the space was way to small for three people to move around in. I am older now and set in my ways, and am VERY reluctant to share a cabin with ANYONE at this stage in my life. Unless I get married again, but if I do, we'll get separate cabins

It's not fair, but the cruise lines justify the 150-200% rate supplements for single passenger by saying it takes the same amount of time to clean up a single cabin or a double cabin occupied by a single person as it does with two or more people in the cabin. They are out to make money, I guess, but it seems so bloody unfair, doesn't it?

I totally agree with you, Alan. It is a shame too. The cruise lines want to expand the market, yet they ignore one of the fasted growing demographics in this country. There are millions of single people out there from the never married, the divorced and the widowed.
I am a solo traveler and I love it, and one of the reasons I don't cruise more is that it can be a hassle to find someone to cruise with. I am cruising with friends to sail the Voyager of the Seas again, but I am also probably going to sail with Carnival later in the summer because they still have the share program. I have been very lucky with this type of program before - either I get the cabin to myself with out having to pay "the supplement" or I get a roommate that is very compatable.
Perhaps if enough singles like you and I request more single accomodations, the cruise lines will respond.

I am now in the same situation of being single (widow) and it is costing me 50% more to sail in September with a group of friends. Still hoping my daughter will join me. However, I would rather pay the extra than share a cabin with a stranger. The group I am going with are either married or have someone to go with them. I also find it a hassle to find someone to share my cabin with. The old Rotterdam had single cabins, but the new ships do not.

On a couple of the cruises we've sailed on where the single supplement was 200% we/ve listed my daughter as the second person in the cabin with my mother although she actually stays with us. We'll pay the third person rate and my mother pays the balance. It will usually come out that she'll end up paying somewhere between 125-150% fo a single. Not great but better than 200%.
