Could I get your input on timing in getting to the city from which your ship is departing? My concern is "Missing the Boat". I will be leaving from NYC on the QE2 on June 24 and wondered if it would be "safer" to get there a day before just in case there is a problem with the flight or are my concerns for naught. I will be flying in from the Midwest (USA).

I would appreciate hearing from you on how you handle connecting with your ship.

Many thanks, Alice

Alice:

I would always recommend flying in at least a day before any cruise. It alleviates the stress of worrying that you may/ may not make the cruise. Even in June a number of events/ situations could result in your flight being delayed/ cancelled.

In addition to having a relaxing arrival at the ship the next day, it also gives you the chance to enjoy your city of embarkation. No matter how many times you may have been to New York or Miami or any other city - returning to it and experiencing it again is always wonderful.

Enjoy your cruise and Julia Child who will be on that Chef's Palate crossing!

Bon Voyage!

While I'm only a one time cruiser (taking a 2nd one this Sept), I'm in total agreement on flying in a day ahead. Plus alot of times (but not every time), cruise lines offer pre and post cruise hotel packages with very reasonable rates.

Unfortunetly for me, Carnival was not offering any packages for my upcoming cruise from Vancouver to Hawaii, but my TA did get me a very nice rate for a hotel right on Waikiki beach for 2 additional nights after the cruise and I shopped around for a hotel in Vancouver for the day before sailing.

I'd never do it any other way.

Thank you so much for the advice. Unfortunately, when I contacted the travel agent, she said it would cost considerably more to change the flight, so we're sticking with "leave same day as ship leaves". I won't do that again. Just too many things that can "go wrong" and the extra day certainly gives you peace of mind.

Great news to hear that the guru chef, Julia Childs, is going to be on this crossing. We did select this one because it sounded so..."yummy"!

Again, I appreciate the responses and apologize for the dalay in getting back to you. Alice

Not only is it a good idea to fly in a day earlier to whatever port, quite often the cruise lines will have pre-packages for a couple nights before departure. Often they are not very expensive, you get at least one entire day in the port to see a few things, and you don't have that added stress of a possibly delayed flight and missing the ship. I and my friends always take a short pre-package. It's usually affordable (and you don't have to take one through the lines; other agencies and companies offer them, including airlines), a pleasant way to start, adds to the fun, and is relaxing. Anyway, I'm sure your connection to NY and the QE2 will be just fine.
