The cruise ship experience is getting more homogenized with mergers and aquisitions. Lines now are more alike than different.

The Elvis impersonators, Vegas revues, beauty/dance/exercise seminars that just try to extract more cash from you, bad comedians, shlock art sales, kareoke, and bingo. The same Caribbean island tourist traps all over again; how boring.

I have previously posted in jest prostitution and marijuana theme cruises.

Serious ideas were a 'high culture' art/music/theatre/dance/literature cruise. Barryboat suggested an ocean going B & B

When I sailed the Stella Oceanis, the cruise was geared to physicians and attorneys and had one lecture a day for 2 hours.

If you could choose or orchestrate a theme for a cruise what would it be?

any thoughts?

I would have to say that QE2 and Caronia have exactly the theme cruises I am looking for - classical music, opera, theatre, literature (to name but a few)...if you enjoy some of the more classical themes - why lok any further.

With that said - wouldn't a DISCO cruise be kinda fun...or even a Game Show cruise - hehehe - THE WEAKEST LINK!

I would also love to see a Dog Show cruise on QE2 or QM2 - that would be interesting.

Just a couple of fun thoughts

Let's see if we can get this one going. I happen to love to read. What about a cruise for book people. A literature cruise. Have noted authors speak about their books. I also happen to like history. I am also a member of the Great War Society. What about a cruise dealing with history, especially the history of the Great War (World War I for the modern among you). Now here's a wild one. What about a cruise for cruisers? In other words a cruise for people who like ships. They would get an opportunity to learn more about the history of merchant navies, cruise lines and the workings of a ship.

I am not sure if my two ideas would count as themes, but here goes. One idea, somewhat along the lines of the literary cruise mentioned above would be an Island Cultural Cruise. It amazes me that many ships cruise the Caribbean and the only hint at Caribbean culture is the steel band on the sun deck. Many of the islands have cultural dance troops and I have wondered why the cruise lines never took advantage of this. Also they could hire some of the island chefs to prepare authentic island food on ship. When the cruise lines prepare jerk chicken, it is tasteless and bland.

My other idea would be to have an Adults only cruise. Not that I have anything against children but it would be nice to have a ship where no one had to worry about rowdy teens and unruly tots.

I don't want to reveal all my secret theme cruise ideas.....

I think a cruise for people who are afraid of the water would be interesting. Water phobias.

A time travel themed cruise would be fun. Ok imaging that all the crew, officers and staff are in on it. Passengers are told that this is a cruise with unexpected and unannounced ports. (NCL did this once or twice, I wonder how it went over?) The twist would be a cool, fog, laser-light show here the ship traveling at speed at night, cruises through a portal set up in the ocean between bouyes. Once through the portal, the passengers are informed that the ship has passed through an unexpected anomaly. The next morning passengers are awaken with an announcement that there is an old pirate ship off the port bow, and that in middle of the night the officer on duty on the bridge stopped the ship to investigate a possible ship in distress. When the ship stopped, Pirates boarded the ship and are now wanting to take the passengers hostage on a remote island. The pirate ship (an old sail ship) even shoots off a few cannons. The dramma unfolds as the passengers are told to do as they are told quietly and orderly. Passengers are taken to a seemingly remote island made up like it was the 1600's, with every attention to detail made with precision, with the actors, and the pirate city. Passengers are told by the officers that they have lost radio and satellite contact with modern civilization. Finally, some of the waiters from the ship gang together and defeat the pirates, rescuing the passengers and bringing them back to the ship. That night the ship passes through another anomoly and the next day the ship is in Future world, or a Jurassic park, or a town right out of the 50's. The ultimate themed cruise...not just planned onboard the ship, but a whole theme-park island hopping, time-travel adventure!

From the mind of Barryboat

We have not been on any theme trips yet we will be taking Aurora from Southampton to NY in September and there is a Classical Theme on that cruise which should be great. However, some friends of mine took another cruise without knowing it was a sequence dance cruise and they were not too happy when the dance floor was taken over by the sequence dancers for the entire time, if they had known they would have been prepared but it was a while ago and they had never heard of a theme cruise then.

How about a cruise for Estate Planning, Real Estate Investment, or Stock Market Investment. Maybe the IRS would allow us to write off the cruise.

That would be my ideal cruise too, Desirod...a cruise for ocean liner nerds like myself. We could have a "Weakest Link" type of game show where all the questions would be on ocean liner/maritime history...I would probably beat all of you though...but it's okay, we could still be friends...

Hey guys, why hasnt anyone picked up on Barryboats idea!!! That would be fantastic, cruise lines i hope u r listening!! I think the whole fantasy/mystery cruise idea would be a sensation. It may take a while to pick up but once word of mouth spread imagine the business! Think of the adventure stories and photos that would come from a cruise like that!! Im all for it
Also a simple mystery cruise (like a mystery flight) would be great, just getting onboard and sailing into the unknown, all the Romance of ocean travel with a sense of adventure and mystery thrown in.
Also just one id like to add, what about a 60's cruise or 70's cruise!! Imagine they could set up costume shops onboard and everyone could dress for the period, they could play all music from that era and the Hair/Beauty salon could ofcourse recreate the masterpieces of the 60's and 70's!! Like a step back intime!! 70's movies in the theatre, 70's programs and news on the TV, 70's style food and activities, I know alot of young people would think it waws Groovy and it would also attract those looking for the Nostalgia
Just some thoughts. Hope some cruise line officials read this!! Happy Cruising

Yes, Barryboat's idea is a good one!

Companies like Disney have obviously made a lot of money selling a fantasy, but I am surprised that no one has taken it a step further. Has anyone seen the Sci-Fi classic movie "Westworld"? Now that's what I call a theme park! We don't need the robots, just some actors, sets, props and imagination!

A ship is the perfect vehicle on which to control the environment, yet exclude the outside world. To an extent Disney are in the lead with their themed ships, but it could be taken so much further.

I think that we will all be spending more of our hard earned money on "fantasies" in the future. After all, a vacation is essentially a 'fantasy', an escapism, in itself!
