We arrived home two weeks ago from our 82-days aboard the ms Rotterdam World Cruise, and it has taken me this long to recover as I came home with a cold and sooooo much to do after being away for 84-days!
Had a wonderful time seeing so many countries and cultures and couldn't have asked for better weather. In 82-days we did not have any rough seas (12 foot swells were the worst for a few hours in the So.China Sea). Guess we were lucky after reading Mary's posts! We only had one real rainy day (a few with sprinkles), most every day was sunny and hot between 85-90F until we reached Turkey where it was in the 60's.
Really enjoyed our "home away from home" for three months, and it was good to be back on the Rotterdam once again as this is one of our favorite HAL ships. We met so many old friends we had sailed with before and also many new passengers that we enjoyed. Every evening about 15 of us would get together in the Ocean Bar for drinks before dinner and to compare our events of that day.
Had the privilage of meeting and chatting with "vulcania" while aboard and to listen to his extremely interesting presentations on all kinds of ships...past and present. I look forward to reading his review which I'm sure he will post in the not-too-distant future on TP.
My only negative comment is that we both gained about TEN POUNDS! Guess the food must have been pretty good?!
Any questions I'll be pleased to answer. There are too many thoughts in my head, and I don't want to bore people. Really enjoyed reading "Scottylass's" posts when we returned. Didn't see the Aurora but we were in Bombay with the QE2.
Great to be home again, but we feel very fortunate to have had the chance to do a World Cruise once in our lives!

Thanks LizB for your post on the Rotterdam's
WC. I can only imagine your experiences. As
you are, I am eagerly awaiting vulcania
full report. Since he's going again next
year on the Amsterdam WC, he must have had
a good trip this year.
Happy continued cruising!!

Good to have you back home Liz - am looking forward to hearing all about the cruise when you are feeling better. Take it easy. Wonder when Vulcania's review will be posted.
I am sure it was nice for you to see so many nice friends. Terry Lee arrives home today - will look forward to see what she has to say also.

Did you only get sick once during the whole voyage?

Cruzmaster...we both had a cold for about 1-week about two weeks into the cruise and then were fine until I got this virus cold the day before we disembarked in Venice and had to fly home. Fortunately for us we were basically healthy the whole time as there was so much to see and do.
Now we look forward to our short 10-day cruise on the Amsterdam in September.

LizB, Welcome home! Sounds like you had a wonderful time! We will be boarding the Rotterdam June 2nd in Barcelona. Wondering if Fekko Ebbens is still the hotel manager; also wondering who is the M'd? Thanks!

Hi PK,
Yes, I believe that Fekko Ebbens will still be the Motel Mgr., however, Putu the present Matre d' leaves the ship on May 21st as far as I know. Not sure who will replace him. I think it's someone named "Robert" (a Dutchman) whom I do not know. Also, I believe that Peter Bos will be Captain -- a real nice guy!

Robert - could be Rob Dyckman - have cruised with him a couple of times - he is Dutch.

LizB (and Sympatico),

Thanks for your response. Will be happy to see Fekko again. We had lunch with him on the Maasdam. Too bad Putu will not be on board. Regarding the "new" M'd, could it be Robert Ramekers (I believe he is Dutch)? We sailed with him on the Statendam.

Hi guys....I'm baaaaack from my mini-World Cruise!!

LizB....sorry to hear that you left the ship unwell.Hope you are fully recovered by now.
Thankfully,I didn't pick up a cold this time around...it sure made a change!!

I can only echo everything positive you said about the ROTTERDAM.she is just super.

Starting with my first step on board in Venice,I was surrounded by smiling stewards, many of them old friends...in fact, a couple of them were dancing with joy when they saw me!! From then on,it was Old Home Week for a couple of days.
Needless to say,I was treated more royally than ever, this being my 6th cruise on the ROTTERDAM since 1998,the last one only in August,2000.

And just like you,Liz,I have gained weight from all that delicious food served up by Chef Bernie Ruis. Those crepes suzettes were scrumptious, mmmm. The Easter Sunday Midnight Buffet in the Lido was breathtaking to say the least.
AND I had my birthday cake, along with my requested Indonesian birthday song from the stewards.

A huge plus for me was the 10-piece orchestra for dancing and backing the headliners. They really shone when they played the charts belonging to a couple of the stars, namely Michael Andrew, who had all big-band arrangements......and Susan Anton, along with her own musical director/accompanist.They brought fabulous charts for the orchestra..I was in 7th heaven listening to them.
I must make mention of the resident cast. They put on a terrific show which wasn't as over-produced as some I have seen.Subsequently, they were all stand-outs,from the singing, the costumes and the dancing.Sorry to go on like this but as a performer myself,I just lost myself in them!

Even the crew show was different. This time it was an International Crew Show, with a cast from Indonesia,Philippines,Canada,Australia,U.K. and U.S.and what a show they presented!!

As for the weather....the only "rough" time was one day and night in the Mediterranean but it never bothered me although some passengers were "under the weather"
Happily, the Atlantic was as smooth as glass with just the odd swell now and again.

It was so sad to leave such a happy ship. There was one couple from Germany who were staying on board and sailing back to Europe. What they weren't aware of was that the upcoming TransAtlantic crossing was with the Harry James Orchestra. When I told them this, they were tickled to bits,as you can imagine.Hope they are having a ball,as I write!!

I must make mention of the Captain's Dinner in the King's Room. This was my 3rd such occasion and I have to say that it really was great. Fekko was the host and a very gracious host he made.Unfortunately, one of the courses was lobster to which I am highly allergic. So there was a mad dash to the kitchen to rustle up something else for me to eat.I finished up with a dish of pasta.Happily, everything else was OK for me to partake, including the main course. The main difference this time was the table. Instead of a long oblong-shape,it was a long oval-shaped table, which seemed to bring everyone closer together, all 24 of us.

My cabin was kept scrupulously clean by my extremely cheerful cabin steward,Imbang. My dining room steward,Yanto, was excellent,as were all of them.

Guess that's it.Just hope I can post this as I have had the devil of a game trying to get on to this page Here's hoping!!!!

Terri

Special for Malcolm....

I forgot to mention just now that when we were in Malaga,Spain, your favourite ship was moored right by us....the BLACK WATCH...and what a pretty ship she is!
That same evening, after dinner,we were in the Ambassador's Lounge, dancing, when the Black Watch sailed out of port. She was alongside us and the passengers were dancing on the deck.We all waved like mad and they all waved back, like mad!

Knew you would want to know this,Malcolm!

Terri
