My review of the Mercury

Hi Scone, yes I'm English! There is a real cultural difference between the Brits and North American's, mind you that's not to say that our cultures are totally incompatible.
I have read the generalisation that us Brits prefer 'plain' (boring) food. There may be an element of truth in this, but I would suggest it's not entirely true. We have a vast choice of multi-national foods in the UK.
In fact the most popular restaurant and take-out food in Britain is Indian cuisine. Curry is more popular that the stereotypical Fish & Chips and Roast Beef! Even McDonalds in the UK, offers Burgers with curry flavours!
Now a good Curry is never boring, lacking in taste and flavour. I understand that P&O, who's ships mainly cater for Brits, have very popular Indian buffets onboard.
Chinese cuisine and Greek food (Kebabs) are also very popular in the UK. I personally also like Thai food. We also now have the full range of American fast food joints.
The food on the Mercury was often French in style. There were too many rich sauces smothering the taste of the meat, for my liking.
There are other cultural gastronomic differences too. Few Brits seem to get excited about Lobster tails, it's not one of our national dishes. However, I accept that the Celebrity food was far from poor, just not always to my liking.
I sailed with Fred. Olson last year. Olsen caters almost exclusively for Brits and I found they food to be far superior to Celebrities. Olsen had obviously geared the menu to British tastes. I suspect that N.American's would not agree? There are also difference in humour and even decor. However it's all a matter of personal opinion. One mans meat...
