At long last: With a new team at the helm, Renaissance Cruises have announced that their fleet of eight newbuilds(R ONE, R TWO, R THREE, R FOUR, etc.) will be getting "real" names at some point in the very near future.

The Chantiers-built 30,000 gt ships have been extremely popular for their relatively intimate size and tastefuldecor. All eight ships are virtually identical, even in furnishings, color schemes, and fittings.

Very good! Nice ships have to get nice names and no letter-number-combinations!

That's real names???? Just as bad as the original ones. Obviously they have no imagination.

I never had any problem with the Renaissance names. I care much more about what the ships are like than what they're named, and they are very nice ships. In a way, I even like the names. It's the only line where the name means something definite to me; if someone mentions one of the names, I know which design of ship they are talking about (Renaissance VII/VIII, R1-R5, R6-R8).

Yesterday I talked to an agent of Renaissance Cruises (Miami main office) about some documents and took the opportunity to ask about the new names and he said the rumours are :
Renaissance Grace
Renaissance Rainbow
Renaissance Spirit
Renaissance Glory
Renaissance Discovery
Renaissance Paradise
Renaissance Adventurer
Renaissance Crown

Who knows ????

It really doesn't matter to me about the names of the Renaissance ships...they are all beautiful ships, inside and out, especially considering their size and the relatively small number of passengers that they carry. We just returned from a Rome-Venice 12 day cruise on R5. We had cruised nearly two years ago on R1 from Athens to Istanbul, our first with Renaissance and found it to be quite enjoyable. Their shore excursions are well planned and we saw a lot of other cruise ships...more than we are accustomed to here on the West Coast!! This last cruise, we saw the Oceanic at Villefranche, the Odessa and the Costa Allegra at Naples, the Wind Surf and Seabourn Goddess II at Corfu and the Rotterdam and Golden Princess at Venice. We're ready to go again!!

how original! this is no better than "borrowing" the same tired, meaningless names already employed by other lines. if this is really the case, then mind as well just stick with the numbers.

I have just returned from an R-5 cruise and has been told by an Renaissance supervisor that the board has decided not change the names anymore.
The causes are the high costs of the official pagers and all the needed changes in promotional material.

It appears Renaissance will be changing the ship names after all. This quote is posted from a cruise industry new source today:

Lyrical Renaissance
13/08/01
"Renaissance Cruises, which has been talking for some time about changing its utilitarian-sounding ship names, R1 through R8, is considering options including more lyrical names inspired by the Renaissance. 'We're definitely going to change the names, but I can't tell you yet what they are,' sales vp Jim Henwood said. 'Obviously, a lot of suggestions include naming them after artists relating to the Renaissance period. "
