We are sailing on the NCL Wind in January 2002. I know there are phones in the cabin, but is this a practical way to keep in contact with the offspring back home?

I have read about the internet cafe. How does it work? Should we bring our laptop? Would we have internet access in our cabin? Can we send digital pix?

Thanks for your help!

Hi,
unless you are a daytrader, or need to stay coennected with your office, I suggest do not schlepp-you-schlepptop!!
connectivity to shore by phone/fax/inetrnet is over a satellite, thus expect minute charges of $15 and up....
if you need to say hello and find out if your mansion is still standing, call from shore, every terminal has a call center and perhaps an inetrnet cafe, if not at dock side then in town.
happy cruisin n surfin

All4csons,
Hi, The internet cafes I have seen are usually located in a separate room and can be used by the purchase of a card which allows a set amount of on-line time. Remember to take e-mail addresses of the people you wish to contact. This is probably the cheapest method of contact.
If you use the phone in your cabin to contact relatives etc. you will know exactly what the charges will be ($ per minute).
If you use a shore phone, be careful; I have known many phones to deduct time from a phone card without making a connection. I have also used credit card phones and been "ripped off". It is wise to contact the operator to check the charges before making the call - but you can still be ripped off. An operator quoted $7.50 for a 3-minute call from Barbados to UK. When the credit card statement arrived, I was charged over five times the quoted price. Unfortunately There is nothing you can do except pay up.
Best of luck to you, and enjoy your cruise.

We were on the Wind a two years ago. They had a spot by the libary that had maybe eight terminals at that time a simple e-mail cost us about $5.00 to $10.00. We used the e-mail address given to us by the ship. If you have a hotmail, yahoo, a few other accounts you could have used them and it was somewhat easier and quicker to hook up so cheaper. Kevin

Our last two cruises, Royal Caribbean charged .50 per minute for e-mail and HAL charged .75 per minute. That's U.S. rate. I sent quite a few e-mail at one sitting and also read my e-mail at home and it was about $7.00 to $8.00 each time I logged on. Not to bad when you figure the cost of postcards plus postage from foreign ports and the cards always arrive after we are back home. I love the internet cafe's. They also had someone there to help you get started.

e-mail is expensive on a ship, but certainly not the $15 per minute charge lacarno stated. I've never seen a charge of more than .75 a minute for connection time. Use the internet to send an e-mail through your ISP (e.g., hotmail, aol, etc.).

Carnival charges around $9.95 a minute for phone calls. I can't remember excactly what NCL charged from the last time I sailed with them, but it seems like it was a little more.

A couple of e-mails to important people at home shouldn't be too much.
