There will be plenty of opportunity for some American ship spotting in Europe next year.

Celebrity are sending three of there ships to Europe for Summer 2002.

Look out for Millennium and newbuild Constellation in the mediterranean. An old favourite, Mercury will be cruising the baltic and Fjords, with ports of call including Dover, Southampton, Dublin, Greenock, Le Havre, Amsterdam and Hamburg.

The Mercury at 77,713 tons may sound small by todays standards, but I can assure you that she looks like a giant in the flesh!

Royal Caribbean will be giving P&O some competition. They are baseing 'Splendour of the Seas' in Southampton for some of the summer. She will undertake Baltic, Norwegian and Meditteranean cruises.

Now how about sending some of the European ships over this side.
I think their ships would be more to my taste.

I've just had a thought! The Mercury MUST be the biggest ever ship to visit Dover Port?

Presumably there are glitz-loving Europeans, just as there are glitz-hating Americans.

Blimey governor!!! Will you pass the grey poupon!!! LOL. Hey we get all the funny Brits as cruise director's, especially Carnival, so the least they can do is to send the ship to pick them up!

I wonder if C -osta-arnival-unard will put the Mersey on any of their itineraries?

It'll be more than their hubcaps they should lose if they do

Carnival Offers 2 European Cruises

Carnival’s big news is the announcement that it will begin offering two European sailings next summer.

The new Carnival Legend will offer longer-than-usual itineraries there. In proverbial sticking-your-toe-in-the-water fashion, Carnival will offer one 12-day northern European voyage (August 24 - September 5). This will sail from London and hit places like Copenhagen, Helsinki, Amsterdam, and St. Petersburg, among others.

And then Carnival Legend sets sail on a “fun ship” transatlantic voyage. A 15-day trip (September 5 - September 20), from London to New York, the Legend will break up the “monotony” of multiple sea days by calling in at places like Le Havre, France; Cobh (Cork), Ireland; Greenock, Scotland; Reykjavik, Iceland; and St. John's, Newfoundland.

Carnival execs say if these sailings are popular they’ll consider bulking up the schedule with European itineraries in 2003 and beyond.

That's right. Most of our friends from other countries don't realize "Yanks" only refers to Northerners. My Grandfather would roll over in his grave is someone called him a Yank.

Actually, Yanks can refer to U. S. Americans, or more specifically U. S. Americans in the North, or New Englanders. The meaning can change.

Funny...the term "Yankee" in the days of Nieuw Amsterdam (now New York) was a derogatory Dutch term for English colonists/traders in North America. The Dutch felt the British traders were trying to swindle them!!

It was probably Irving Berlin who first used the term "Yank" to collectively describe US armed forces members in his WWI Song "Over There"..... the "Yanks are comin'..."

In England they call big American cars a

Yank Tank

America makes everything big except ships until the BigU,

Europe the opposite.

For some the meaning can change, but down South, we don't consider ourselves "Yanks." (Except for the Northern transplants)!

Yes, it really only seems to be the North Easter America (New England) that are called Yanks. When I was in Ireland visiting family/friends, we were referred to YANKS or BOSTON YANKS!

Yes I know this is all true but to most Europeans anyone from America is a Yank.

This is similar to everyone from Britain being English or calling The Netherlands Holland.

Thats life!!!!!!!!!

There always seems to be a hint of anti-American sentiment at this post...why?

And Carnival and Celebrity Cruise Lines are NOT American-owned anyway, so how can you say they are American ships.

Rex -- Carnival is American owned. I agree with you, however, about the slight anti-American sentiment.

And Nathan...

I would be the first to tell you that the US is far from perfect, what country is? But I think loving your country means loving it warts and all...I would rather live here than anywhere else, though I love visiting other countries...at least we don't have to stand in line waiting for toilet paper, you know?

And now, having sailed Carnival, I really don't know why people bash it the way they do...I liked them better than RCI (though I hear they have cleaned up their act too), so what if they cater to American passengers? Until I get the chance to sail something more upscale, Carnival if fine with me...
