Hello fellow shiplovers.
If we had the money to start our own cruise line, lets say with one medium size ship, what would be our main focus of atention.
what is it that those cruise addicts really want. I'll make a random list, the order has nothing to do with the importance of the subject. Cruise Line executives always tell us what we want, they point to research, feedback from past passengers and Travel Agents, but I doubt that these respondees are truly shiplovers!!
here my list:
1. size
2. size of cabins
3. cabin with balconies
4. lounges decor
5. food
6. service
7. entertainment
8. lectures
9. destination
10. cost of the cruise
11. marketed to a single ethnic group, or across europe, the world ?
12. seasons: where should the shiop be, e.i.
spring med, summer Baltic/Scandinavia, winter caribbean ?
13. what you can do without, e.i. wall climbing, ice skating, internet cafe.....
14. do you worry about the environmental impact of your vessel?
15. ships registry and crew:
would you be willing to spend more, if the ship flies a national flag and employs properly trained crews who speak your language ??
16. which of the ships presently sailing would be an example of your "dream ship" and why ?? what is missing or what could be eliminated to bring this ship up to par with your ideal?
17. If destination and sightseeing is important, why not sail to these areas, outside the "normal seasonal" times? Why go to a certain place when 10 other mega cruise liners are in port. Imagine Skagway, Alaska, population 380 persons, 20.000 cruise ship passengers.......
Give me your ideas and I shall compile a list and hopefully we will be able to come up with an interesting cruise & vessel concept.
Be creative, go outside the established norm, but be realistic.
Lets GO !!!

Hmmm a good question Locarno, but A big question.

1) Ship Size

Choice would be nice. Big is not necessarily bad, but I like to see some 30,000 ton newbuilds!

2) External Style

Firstly I'd like to ships built that are a little more traditional looking. I like fantails, promenades and two funnels. I like navy blue hulls and white superstructure. I don't like ships that look like office blocks. These features can still be achieved on new ships.

3) Internal Decor

Once again I like a traditional looks and maritime features. I don't like ship interiors that are glittz are look like a shopping mall. Orange and purple colour schemes are a no go.

4) Public Rooms

I don't have a problem with climbing wall and ice skating rinks, but I also think traditional rooms like Libraries and Cinemas are important. I don't use casinos so I don't need one. I don't use beauty treatments, because I'm beautiful already. These spaces could put to better use on my ship.

5) Cabins

I think inside cabins should be abolished on newbuilds. Surely someone could come up with a design where all the cabins are outside and all the public spaces are on the inside. I know some small ships are designed like this, but why not the big ones? I don't want a giant cabin, just a well designed one. A fridge, DVD and CD should be standard, with the library loaning the discs. Balconies are nice, but not essential for me.

6) Destination/Ports of call.

I like the Ports, the more the better, with just a few sea days. I think that ship itineraries in general could be a little more adventurous with more two-night stays in ports and combined land tours. I'd love to go to Antarctica. However, maybe I will only be able to afford it when ships the size of 'Voyager of the Seas' go - then it will be completely spoilt.

I've run out of time. I will deal with food, crew, etc. later!

Malcolm, sorry to disagree with you (that is what the forum is for...) but can you keep just one inside cabin for me on your Dream Ship. I like to wake up when I am ready - not when the sun streams through the window.

Ya, he is right... Plus I might get seasick looking out a window while the ship is moveing... We used to get them because they are the cheepest kind... but now i prefer them. The kinds od Inside cabins on Majesty of the Seas we great, the way they positioned them.

...how about a ship with balcony cabins right on the waterline? Wouldn't that be exciting?

See you on that ship of dreams Malcolm. Just sailed Norwegian Sea had a large window on the 8th (top) obstructed by a lifeboat. Can't complain however paid for inside bottom. I guess Norwegian considered it an excellent upgrade but I have better dreams of ships low and inside. Made extensive video of Rembrandt and I'm about to do one of Carnival Victory end of month. I hope I can keep from laughing at the glitz. I always must keep in mind my love for ocean and not ship especially after Rembrandt.

Yeah malcolm I like the sound of your ship! I would have four funnels maybe and then ship would be black with buff or red funnels and it would be decorated to make it look real old! Guess where I got those ideas!? lol I hate those ships that look like a funfair on the insides!!

If I want to experience Vegas, I'll go to Vegas! If I want to see bright red, orange and yellow decor, I'll go to Mcdonalds. If I want to see walls of glass, I'll look at the World Trade Centre.

Hey I've had a great idea - we could fell one of the trade centres into the Hudson, like a lumber jack. Then we could add a funnel on top and call it a newbuild! We could later use the second for her sister!

Not so much a dream, but a nightmare!

Actually, my dream ship already exists with the exception of the cabins and spa area..... Wrap around promendade deck, dining room placed mid-ship,
great outdoor deck space, all outside cabins....she's.............the ROYAL PRINCESS.

I'd only make a couple of changes.....I'd have the Seabourn triplets' cabins and one of Celebrity's Century class spas installed.

With a ship like that...I'd never go home!!

Any of you that have been posting for any length of time know that my "dream ship" would have to have a dance floor larger than a postage stamp. It's very difficult to run out of dance floor before running out of a ballroom dance routine

Anxiously waiting to dance across the Atlantic on the S/S Norway one last time next month.
